Global Education Project
SizaBantwana works in the rural communities surrounding Hazyview, Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. They care for AIDS orphans and vulnerable children by addressing their immediate needs and the larger issues in the community to ensure that they have a bright and hopeful future. It is the belief of SizaBantwana that children need a strong positive environment in order to develop their full potential.
Evansville's very own Baden Schrab and his family have traveled to South Africa to work with this organization in person. So far GEP has been impressed with SizaBantwana's Care Centers and Reading Project. We look forward to continuing to build a relationship with this organization.

Upcoming Testing Dates
Listed below are upcoming mandated testing dates. Please ensure your student is in attendance on these dates and schedule appointments around these dates/times if at all possible.
ACT/WORKEYS TESTING –FEBRUARY 20th, 21st
On Wednesday, February 20th, 2019, Evansville High School and all other public schools in the State will be administering the ACT Test to their juniors. As many other schools also do on that day, our sophomores will be taking the Pre-ACT Test. The results of the Pre-ACT are prescriptive in nature and will be used as feedback for students, parents, and teachers to identify gaps which will better prepare them for the ACT the following year. Due to the nature of having half of our 562 students testing on that day, we require many adult proctors, which becomes a logistical issue.
In order to address these proctoring concerns on the 20th;
· Seniors will not be required to attend classes on February 20th unless specifically requested to by a teacher or administrator.
- Sophomores and Juniors will be taking the Pre-ACT and ACT respectively.
- Freshmen will be participating in our Freshmen Seminar until lunch at 11:50 AM and will then be dismissed following lunch at approximately 12:20 PM. ****We will be running an alternate schedule consisting of several sessions designed to process their first semester of high school with them and discuss skills and strategies for building upon first half of the school year and finishing on a positive note. Our Senior NHS Students will be assisting with the Freshmen Summit.
Freshmen will be dismissed at 12:20 PM and sophomores and juniors will be dismissed when they finish with the testing(approximately 12:30-1 PM). For those students who do not have transportation, we will have work areas available and staffing to supervise in the building until normal dismissal times at 3:05.
The District and TAHER will be providing a free breakfast for all 9th-12th grade students on the morning of the 20th from 7:50-8:20 AM and regular lunches will be served at 11:40 and 12:20.
WORKEYS On Thursday, February 21st, the mandatory WORKEYS Test will be administered to Juniors, but we will be running a regular schedule for all other grade levels. The juniors will be dismissed following the completion of their testing at approximately 12:30 PM.
ACT Aspire April 9th and 10th (All Freshmen and Sophomores)
The Aspire Test maps student progress through high school on a scale which is anchored to the ACT Scoring System. This test is given to all freshmen and sophomores in the State. Juniors and seniors will be running a normal schedule on these days
Wisconsin Forward April 11th (All sophomores)
The Forward Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready. The Forward Exam is administered online in the spring of a students’ sophomore year in the subject of Social Studies only. All other grade levels will run a normal schedule on April 11th.

Panama Day 7 – Snorkeling in Bocas del Toro
We take a small plane to Bocas del Toro on Colon Island and stay at the Bocas Inn with our gracious host Hercelia. Take turns sleeping outside in a hammock and jump right into the ocean from the side of the Inn! We will travel via boat to different snorkeling areas and you will enjoy hours of snorkeling in pristine environments. You will see more fish and types of coral than you ever thought possible. Bocas del Toro is known for its cacao production and relaxed ‘backpacker’ atmosphere.
Quotes from Student Journals (Day 7):
“The coral is so intricate and beautiful. I love watching the fish interact with the coral.”
“We have learned the importance of protecting the environment and of respecting people who may be different than us.”
“This trip has really opened up my mind to the impact I have on the environment. Back in Evansville, I am going to be more careful about what I do.

Local Students Compete in Voice of Democracy Contest
Four Evansville High School students recently competed in the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Evansville VFW Memorial Post #6905. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme was “Why My Vote Matters.” Local members of the VFW judged the entries and chose one applicant to move on to the next level of competition. Elsie Kramer’s submission was chosen to continue on to the district competition. Although the Evansville High School students did not win at the district level, the local VFW members were very impressed with all four entries and wanted to recognize the students for their efforts. VFW Commander Michael George and member John Schneider recognized the entrants by presenting them with Chamber certificates. Elsie also won a VFW backpack and Alexandra Dambach received a VFW pocket bag for earning 2nd place. The other two applicants were David Brumbaugh and Lydia Peart. Congratulations to all entrants!
