Red Ribbon Week: The National Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week
We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week NEXT week, Oct. 22-24th. Red Ribbon Week began when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This started the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs.
Our preschool through first grade students will receive Red Ribbon Week stickers to wear each day next week. Second through fourth grade students will receive ribbons to wear and keep; and fifth and sixth grade students will receive a red or yellow silicone bracelet with a drug free slogan.
We will also Pledge To Be Drug Free! as a school again this year! Please look for the pledge when you come visit with your child’s teacher during Parent/Teacher conferences.
We will also have themed, dress up days during Red Ribbon Week around being drug and alcohol free and making healthy choices.
MONDAY, Oct. 22th: “Follow Your Dreams, Don’t Do Drugs” -- Wear Your Pajamas/
TUESDAY, Oct. 23rd: “Use Your Head, Don’t Use Drugs” - Wear Silly Hats/Crazy Hair day
WEDNESDAY, Oct. 24th: “Proud To Be Drug Free” -- Wear RED!
During Red Ribbon Week and through the month of November, we will have discussions surrounding the history of Red Ribbon Week and the introduction of drugs. In the lower grades this discussion involves good and bad things to put in your body and in the upper grades it involves how many different drugs they know and the effects those drugs have on the body. (You would be amazed where kids learn about drugs – social media, the internet, their friends, TV, and movies, to name a few). We will discuss the effects of alcohol and nicotine on the body, as well as how to deal with peer pressure. These topics always spark discussions during counseling time so they may do the same at home. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t ever hesitate to call or email me!
Sincerely,
Stacy Cross, Counselor

Fundraiser Pick Up
Mustangs Reading Program
The student who reads the most in our school will get to throw out a first pitch at the Home Opener.
The top reader in the entire program (all participating schools) will receive a theme park ticket to Walt Disney World or a $100 Disney Gift certificate.
The class that reads the most will win a pizza party from Little Caesars.
Extracurricular Events
Due to the many student behavior issues we have had at extracurricular events, it has become necessary to not allow any student in grades 8 or below to be dropped off and left at an acitivity without adult/parent supervision. If a student is dropped off, we will remove the student from the event and contact the parent to pick up the child immediately.
During outside events, students need to stay off the baseball field, out of the dugouts, and not be west of the grand stands (a favorite gathering place for elementary and junior high students during football games). During inside events, all students need to remain in the location of the event. Please do not allow your child to roam the hallways or gather in the high school commons area.
While we do our best to provide a safe environment with administrative supervision, it is difficult to ensure the safety of all of our students without the help of adult/parent supervision. Thank you for your support.
