Panther Post
April 8th - April 13th
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I wasn't able to get it in the last post, but our orchestra went to San Marcos High School the previous week for the UIL competition and put on the best performance I have ever heard in middle school. (picture below) The kids were amazing and Hallie Betts can put you to tears with her violin. The kid is a phenom. Great job Mrs. Sorgi for all the hard work you do preparing our kids.
The band also performed for UIL at Roosevelt High School and like the orchestra, earned sweepstakes for their performance. Lopez students are true artists and we thank Mrs. Garza and Mrs. Powell for their long hours and dedication!
Speaking of artists, if you have never been to the NEISD Night Gallery, look for it next year and make sure you go. On display is art from every middle school and high school in the district. You would be amazed at the level of talent. And more than not, when you see one you really like, you will notice it is from Lopez. Mrs. Williamson and Ms. Volz do an amazing job developing budding artists. It is probably one of my favorite events each year.
This week coming up includes some recognition for some people who do a ton for our school that often don't get enough praise. First is April 10th, which is National Librarian Day. Mrs. Jenke, in case you didn't know, is one of the best librarians in the city. Not only does she manage the books on her shelves, she also teaches lessons, organizes technology, keeps us on the forefront of innovation, presents at statewide functions and is a part of just about everything good that goes on here at school. Thank you Mrs. Jenke!
And next, during the whole week, is Assistant Principal's Week from the 8th through the 12th. A lot of times, the only interaction you might have with them is when something goes wrong, but they are so much a part of the positive experiences here at Lopez as well. They are so often here before 7am and stay until the last kids are picked up from a function way into the night. They get here early to make sure the building is ready to go and everything is in place. They evaluate teacher performance to make sure your kids are getting the best education around. They are at every function supporting your kids whether it is sports or fine arts or anything else we offer. They help in training staff and organize supervision schedules to keep your kids safe. They make sure the building maintenance is up to par, coordinate safety drills, fulfill legal requirements, manage inventory and last but not least, have to maintain discipline in a school with around 1300 middle school students. Usually the only feedback they get is when someone is angry and they are on the receiving end of a frustrated parent and they do their best to calm the situation, provide the help that is needed, while maintaining the professionalism that is required. Ms. Elliot and Mr. Perales, thank you for what you do for the Lopez students, parents and staff. You are two of the best assistant principals on the planet.

LOPEZ PANTHERS LEAD, SERVE AND INSPIRE
I think many of us would agree that it seems like life has gotten busier with our students homework, students needing a ride here and there and the list could go on. . Dr. Stephen Covey suggest we ‘Sharpen the Saw’ . This analogy means that when we “sharpen the saw” we are really taking care of and making better the greatest asset that we have, which is ourselves. And how do we do this? We need to take time to practice a balanced and self-renewing of our physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual lives. How are you taking time to “sharpen your saw”? How is your child taking time to “sharpen his/her saw”? Send in pictures of your students taking time to sharpen his/her saw. Send to mvolz@neisd. We will post these pictures to help inspire others and to motivate others and to model how taking time for yourself is healthy.
YEARBOOK NEWS
ATTENTION UPCOMING 8TH GRADERS
Dear Incoming Freshman Parents,
The Ronald Reagan PTA is hosting a parent information program for all current eighth grade parents. The event will take place Wednesday, April 10 from 9:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. in the Reagan auditorium.
The transition from middle school to high school can be as anxious for parents as it is for students. Let this program help relieve some of that anxiety. During the program, you will meet Reagan principal, Brenda Shelton, Reagan PTA President, Deanna Lauer, the Incoming 2019-2020 Reagan PTA President and Reagan counselors who will each give an overview of what incoming freshman can expect at Reagan High School. Everyone in attendance will be entered into a drawing to win a Reagan charm bracelet.
After the program, Reagan PALS will lead attendees on a tour of the school. If you have any questions regarding this event, please email Connie Carrington,ptaconnie@att.net
