Past Week...
We took our Show what you know for this concept, and I am pleased with our work. Your students made me proud. The grade is in the grade book. I will send this home today. Please review it with your student and make corrections.
See eClass Unit 4 for continued practice and review with fractions...
For example, 5 1/4 - 2 3/4 = ____. To solve this 5 1/4 needs to be renamed as 4 4/4 + 1/4 which equals 4 5/4 - 2 3/4 = 2 2/4 = 2 1/2. In this problem, students must rename (borrow 1 from the whole number and rename the whole number 1 as a fractional one (1 = 4/4) with the denominator as the determining source) the mixed number.
Another example is 7 1/2 - 3 4/5 = ____. First, students must find a common denominator for the unlike denominators. 7 1/2 x 5/5 = 7 5/10 and 3 4/5 x 2/2 = 3 8/10.
Then 7 5/10 - 3 8/10 is the new problem. The fraction 8/10 can not be subtracted from 5/10, so 7 5/10 has to be renamed - borrow 1 from the whole number and represent that one as a fraction. 7 5/10 becomes 6 10/10 + 5/10 which equals 6 15/10. Now students can subtract --- 6 15/10 - 3 8/10 = 3 7/10. As you can see there a a lot of steps to renaming fractions. Please practice this.

I am grateful for the time I've had to get to know your students, to teach them, laugh with them, and to be firm with them so that they can continue to become their best selves. Have a wonderful, safe Happy Thanksgiving! Many blessings to you and yours always.
