Week 8, T2 2022

23/6/22 - He Pānui Wiki Waru, Whānga Tuarua

Kia ora e te whānau

It's exciting to be heading into our first ever national Matariki long weekend - and what a beautiful morning it was to start things off. The next few days will be the perfect time to get outside in the morning to have a look at the Matariki cluster of stars. Hopefully you can still remember how to find it from our breakfast session last year. Below is a copy of the image Whāea Micaela took last year - it might help you pick out the cluster.

We would like to thank the team at Cabernet Foods - Kyntyre Meats for donating the sausages for our Matariki cooking sessions - we are very appreciative and love the way you look after us here at Gladstone School. If there are any more adults free to help with our Matariki cooking next Monday please let us know. We need about another 2-3 helpers if we can. Please email principal@gladstone1.school.nz.

Haere ra Homes whānau. Yesterday we farewelled Jake, Jackson, Danny, Clinton & Kathryn. They are off on a new adventure that will see them living in the UK. Have fun, we will miss you, keep in touch.

We were impressed with the standard of the Ōnoke speeches presented this week. It was a difficult task to select the final winners. Well done to Cooper Brady (Y7) & Levi Kokx (Y8) who are going on to represent Gladstone School at the South Wairarapa Speech Competition this coming Monday. Good luck!

We loved having Ben Laybourn in school this week co-teaching science lessons. It was awesome to see how engaged everyone was. Our development in the science 'Ako' space continues into Term 3.

Well done to past pupils Sam Blundell & William Orsborn who won their respective catergories at the Wairarapa Times Age Sports Awards last night. Great job, we're proud of you both.

Values Focus This Week

Big picture

I was thinking today about the order of our values. Back in 2020 we decided to have Manaakitanga, Ako and Kaitiakitanga in a certain order for the following reasons: if you are part of a place or group and you need to be cared for, welcomed, noticed, loved before you have the confidence and headspace to develop your Ako (teaching, learning, creativity, curiosity...). Once you have developed this, you can then actively show Kaitiakitanga (care and protection of people, places, language). All three are dependant on the others and weave together to create a well rounded individual.

Have a lovely long weekend spending time with friends and family - Happy New Year!

Nga manaakitanga,

Belinda
