Week 3 Term 4 SFDS Newsletter

MARY-ANGELA'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou e ngā whānau
With our senior students away on camp this week, things have been pretty quiet in the playground.
We are working really hard to improve attendance rates at SFDS. We have a number of children whose attendance is at or below 80%. A large number of absences are due to families taking additional days before or after weekends, before or after school holiday times. Attendance at school is really important for each child’s learning progress.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS’ CULTURAL FESTIVAL
As promised last week, below are links to two videos of last week’s cultural festival that our Kapahaka group participated in along with several other catholic Schools across Wellington. Special thanks to Haley for helping with the girls’ moko, to Jo for helping throughout the day and to Matua Henare for preparing the tamariki and helping with our performance on the day.
ROAD SAFETY
This week I have received two emails from members of our community detailing dangerous instances of driver behaviour during school drop off and pick up. In one instance, the person’s car was scraped on Clyde Street; in the other instance a car was observed carrying out dangerous driving manoeuvres when dropping children off.
We need to keep our tamariki, staff and families safe. Please ensure that you keep your driving speed low to suit the conditions at these times, watching out for:
- young child getting out of cars
- young children crossing the road
- road patrollers
- other cars pulling over for drop offs
- pedestrian crossings
Please observe safe driving rules and avoid making U-Turns outside the school.
THANK YOU
A few weeks ago, I requested 20 movie vouchers from The Empire Cinema. This request was generously granted. These vouchers will be presented as prizes for children who follow our school values! Thank you to Pat, Nick and the team.
Congratulations to the tamariki who celebrated their Confirmation at a special Mass in our church recently.

GARDEN TO TABLE
This term room 11 buddies are helping room 5 to cook and garden! We made pasta with Incredible Hulk green sauce.
Recipe: in the food processor put 1.5 cups greens/herbs ( we used silver beet), 2 teaspoons mustard, 1 gherkin, the juice of a lemon then add enough oil to get a sauce consistency. Whizz it up and add it to your pasta!
Principal's Cup
This cup is awarded weekly to a St Francis de Sales student who demonstrates exemplary service to our kura and our community.
A huge congratulations to the wonderful Tabitha who is this week's recipient of our ‘Principal ‘s Cup’!
