Northside Elementary School
November 2018
Thoughts
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to November! I hope that your experiences with parent teacher conferences were positive and you were able to connect with your child(s) teacher. Working in partnership is the best way to help our children reach their potential! An especially big thank you to our PTA for the wonderful dinners provided on both nights!
Please take the Parent/Teacher conference survey by clicking the link below. We will use the data to plan future conferences. Thank you!

It appears that Fall has officially arrived and looks like there is no turning back! We will continue to go outside for recess during cold weather Please make sure your student(s) are bringing warm clothing with them to school. It is a good idea to make sure that warm jackets, stocking hats, gloves/mittens are sent with your child(ren) and are labeled.
The tradition at Northside is to hold a Halloween parade for all preK-5th grade students. The parade will take place from 2:15-2:30 pm on the blacktop. In the case of inclement weather, the parade will be held in the hallways. PreK-2 students will wear masks they designed in art class and 3-5 will wear their halloween costumes. 3-5 students should not wear their costumes to school as they will have time to change. Please note that no face paint or wearable masks of any kind will be permitted. Students that have masks will be asked to hold them in front of their faces to ensure we can still identify them. Classroom parties will take place from 2:30-3:00 pm. Parents are welcome to attend the parade and parties.
A reminder that we have an 11:30 dismissal on Friday November 2nd for teacher in-service training.
Sincerely,
Mr. Kashner
Winter Weather Reminders
All children will be outside when the "feels like" temperature reaches 10 degrees and above. Please dress accordingly. The children will be inside for recess on days that "feels like" temperature is under 10 degrees.
To determine this temperature we will utilize www.weather.com.
Nursing Notes
In the upcoming months, we usually start seeing more illnesses as children spend more time indoors. Below are a few reminders to consider:
- Students must be fever free (without medication) for 24 hours prior to returning to school.
- If your child has been vomiting or has diarrhea, please do not send your child to school until they are able to tolerate solid foods without vomiting or having loose stools.
- If your child needs to take medication during the day (either prescribed or over the counter), a parent or guardian needs to fill out a medical authorization form and turn into the nurse. Medication needs to be brought in by an adult.
Changes Ahead
We have decided to postpone our Northside talent show until the Spring. This will give our students more time to prepare!
Our schedule for Halloween day will change slightly. Our parade will start at 2:15 pm with parties starting at 2:30 pm.
Safe Snacks
Only items on the District Approved list will be accepted in the classroom. This includes birthday treats, holiday/party treats, treat-bag items and valentine candy.
Food for personal snacks eaten in the classroom must be an item from the snack list. Snacks may be packaged individually at home.
Attendance
According to our policy, if a child has ten (10) days of excused and/or unexcused absences the following may take place:
- 10 day absence policy letter sent home
- Any student who has accumulated ten (10) days of unexcused and/or excused absences per year must obtain a doctor's note for each and every absence over the ten (10) days to be considered excused.
Reminder: Nine (9) total unexcused absences means a student is in direct violation of the Compulsory Attendance Laws of Illinois. Administration reserves the right to contact the Henry County Truant Officer.
Please note that there will be times your child will be sent home because of illness. Arrangements should be made to have your child picked up within the hour. This is for the well-being of your child and other students.
