It's a Great Day to be at JSE!
Good Afternoon, JSE Families,
We started our morning with breaking news from our JSE News broadcast! Our student newscasters informed us of our Words of the Week for this school year (WOW): contain and ambition. Each week the JSE News will introduce the WOW words above to students and staff. We begin with an explanation of the word, model how to use the word in a sentence, and encourage use of the words throughout the week. Each word will be added to our school-wide word wall. According to Marzano and Pickering, leading United States educational researchers, “One of the key indicators of students’ success in school, on standardized tests, and indeed, in life, is their vocabulary" (Marzano & Pickering, 2005). With the understanding that vocabulary knowledge is an important factor in student learning and academic growth, we are excited to incorporate the WOW in all subjects and areas at JSE. Join us in using the words at home!
The news also presented, the "Start with Hello" Mission celebrated this week at JSE! "Start with Hello" was created by a family from Sandy Hook Elementary, wanting their child's legacy to live on. Through out the week we will be discussing how to make friend, be a friend, and help others who may feel left out. This is the perfect week to remember the purpose of our buddy benches.
Congrats to our 19-20 Spell Bowl Team: Max Claussen, Bella Wallace, Landon Franz, Rowan Kruszka, Rose Zaideman, Aliza Welch, Evan Lahart, Will Kehoe, Anika Villarruel, Cole Spencer, Gracie Doud. We know they will work hard to prepare for the upcoming spell bowl competition! A big thanks to Mrs. Koch's expert guidance with our team!
We hope you can join us for our Family PTO event this coming Saturday!

Notes from our Home School Advisor Mrs. Morton:
October 7th eLearning and Parent-Teacher Conferences Information
On Monday, October 7th, we will be having this year’s parent/teacher conferences and on this day your child will participate in an eLearning day through Canvas from home. If you have not already done so please let your teacher know when you are available for conferences. We look forward to meeting with each of you! In regards to the eLearning Day and possible future eLearning days, your child's teacher will communicate their expectations, assignments, and activities for each subject with you through email and your child's Canvas inbox by 9am. Your child's teacher will only be available via e-mail and Canvas messaging. Please contact your child's teacher on eLearning days for support. eLearning days are considered schools days, so school work will need to be completed for a grade, as well as for attendance. The expectation is for each student to access their Canvas Account and complete the work assigned on the eLearning Day. Students will have two additional school days beyond the actual eLearning day to complete their work.
Students are currently using Canvas for a mock eLearning session at school and for homework, this will help prepare us for a successful first eLearning day of the school year! Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns in accessing Canvas or completing Canvas assignments at home.
Frequently asked questions and answers can be found on our website with specific instructions to support Canvas online access at home: http://jsimatovich.union.k12.in.us/
