Tornado Times
News From John Tuck Elementary
December 2020
Principal's Message
Dear John Tuck Community,
I hope this letter finds each of you well and that you had the chance to truly enjoy family during Thanksgiving. A big thank you to all parents/guardians for supporting your child’s iReady diagnostic assessment. Your child’s classroom teacher will be sending home a personalized iReady report for you with detailed information about student strengths and opportunities for growth in math. We encourage you to review this information as we partner to help each student grow their skills.
Lunch Club
We are also looking forward to the continuation of the Lunch Club activity for as long as the weather holds out. We would love to see the students on their designated day if it works for your schedule!
Terrific Tornados
Beginning in December, once per month we will be honoring several students who have been going above and beyond to follow the Tornado Way, which is being Safe, Respectful, Responsible Learners. Students selected will be invited to school for an opportunity to be recognized and enjoy a Covid safe bingo party with prizes as a reward for their hard work.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
This is a friendly reminder that all students can get free breakfast and lunch on any school day. We can even give you extras for any 1-18 year old that lives in your household!
Family Access Network
Does your child or family have additional needs during this holiday season? Please let use know and we can connect you with our F.A.N. Advocate, Jennifer Summerton to get you plugged in with resources.
Thanks for all you do to support your child and the greater John Tuck Community. We wish you all a wonderful Holiday Season and a Merry Christmas. #allinforallkids

John Tuck Elementary – Go Tornados!
FREE School Meals
During Comprehensive Distance Learning, Nutrition Services will continue to provide FREE curbside school meal pickup for all children 18 & under on planned school days from 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. During these hours, you can pick meals up at John Tuck on 10th street (front of the school).
Meals distributed curbside are a grab & go breakfast and lunch packaged together. They may be picked up at any of these locations (regardless of where students are enrolled) by either children themselves or a parent/guardian on their behalf at NO CHARGE. No identification will be necessary.

Weather Permitting
Tornado Lunch Club Guidlines
Wear a mask while on site (can be pulled down to eat and drink)
Pick up lunch and find a colored dot on the lawn to eat your lunch (10th St.).
Students may walk to and from school (with parent permission) or may be joined by their family.
Students must stay in their designated area (on their colored dot) and not mix with other students.
Students must be picked up or walk home by 12:00. Afternoon CDL lessons begin at 12:30 and staff will not be available to supervise students who are not picked up on time.
We understand that due to family circumstances that this time doesn’t work for all families. However, with the CDL schedule, this is the only time that allowed students to not miss classroom instruction with their teacher. We can’t wait to see and build relationships with your student(s). If you have any questions please call the office.
New From F.A.N. (Family Access Network)
Are your kids ready for outdoor play this winter? I still have coats, hats and gloves in the FAN office for any student who needs them.
As the weather is getting colder and heating bills rise, remember that NeighborImpact has energy assistance available. Go to https://www.neighborimpact.org/get-help/help-with-bills/home-energy-assistance/ for more information on how to apply. NeighborImpact also has COVID-related rental assistance available. You can access their Online Rent Assistance Application/COVID Rent Relief Application here: https://form.jotform.com/92076439399169 (use the button in the upper right hand corner to choose English or Spanish.) Thrive Central Oregon also has mortgage, rental and utility assistance available for low-income families. More information is available on their website: www.thrivecentraloregon.org
There are still many local resources to help families with food. So if you’re struggling to stock your pantry toward the end of each month, or are trying to prepare for the holidays when school is not in session, give me a call and I’ll connect you with one of our local food resources.
I also have basic hygiene supplies in the FAN Office for families who could use help with those things. All you need to do is ask!
Stay warm and healthy, and please don't hesitate to contact me if I can help with any of the above resources, or with any other needs your students or family may have.

OSU Nutrition
Being active is part of living a healthy lifestyle. Children should do least 60 minutes of activities that get their heart pumping every day. Students have many chances to be active at school, help them meet their goal by finding activities that fit with what you usually do. Remember to have fun! Give some of the simple ideas listed below a try this month and check out our interactive Bingo for activities to try during the school break.
Indoor Activities:
- 5-minute dance party,
- jog in place,
- jumping jacks,
- push-ups, sit ups during TV commercials,
- hallway hopscotch
Outdoor Activities:
- park further away from the destination,
- go for a walk as a family,
- check out the dry canyon trial on foot or by scooter or bike
Be A Food Hero
Every child should have the chance to be healthy and successful. Our website www.foodhero.org can help! Be a food hero by choosing fruits and vegetables for snacks. Even one or two more fruit and veggie filled snacks per week can make a difference. Remind children that fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients that help them grow and be strong. Here are a few healthy fruit and veggie snacks for at home and the classroom: bananas, apples, oranges, dried fruits or fruits canned in 100% juice, carrot sticks, snap peas.
Keep up-to-date with the Nutrition Education Program by following them on Facebook and Instagram or by emailing Kaitlin by visiting the Deschutes County Nutrition Education Program website.
