The original construction of the tower began in 1173, but ultimately took about 200 years to complete due to wars, and other obstacles. The tower fell several times throughout the construction of the tower, and still leans to the right to this day. The reason fo this is when it was originally built, one side of the tower held a softer foundation, so one side of the tower actually sank into the ground. The building consists of 296 steps, which visitors must climb to reach the top.
