Homecoming Week at East

Next week is Homecoming week at St. Charles East. All Compass Academy students who attend East during 1st and/or 2nd periods will be able to stay for the outdoor Homecoming assembly before catching the shuttle to Compass Academy by Door 40 (outside the stadium) at 9:45. The bus will leave promptly at 9:45, so students must be prepared to get on the bus right after the assembly, which is scheduled to end at 9:40.

Students who are involved in sports or activities at East who are planning to participate in the Homecoming parade on Friday must have their coach or club sponsor email me ( by Wednesday indicating that they will be participating in the parade. This way, teachers will be able to communicate with students about what they will miss beforehand.

Student Parent Teacher Organization

Because a foundational principle of Compass Academy is to incorporate student voice whenever possible, our PTO will also include students, who will not only be encouraged to attend meetings and contribute ideas, but also to demonstrate leadership in the organization.

Our first meeting will be Tuesday, September 21st at 7:00 pm via Zoom. All interested students and parents are welcome to attend. To join the meeting, click this link: Compass SPTO Meeting.

Big picture

Navigation, Extended Study Option for Students

Since there is not failure at Compass Academy, there is just "not yet" when it comes to demonstrating competency, students who do not demonstrate competency in their 1st quarter courses will be given the opportunity to continue to work with support, as needed, during either Block C (2:30-3:45 pm on all school days but Wed.) or Block D (4:15-6:45 pm, Tues. & Thurs.) in the 2nd quarter in order to earn credit for those courses. Students who do not demonstrate competency for a course within the semester will not receive credit for that course unless they opt to continue to work with support during Navigation in Block C or Block D in 3rd quarter. Our goal is for every student to demonstrate competency in every course, regardless of the time needed to meet that goal.

It is part of our mission at Compass Academy to provide personalized learning for students, meaning not only that they have a choice and voice in how they demonstrate learning, but also that they are able to work at a pace that best accommodates their learning needs. We want students to be challenged, but also supported, as they learn. Extended Study allows students to do just that.

Block D STEM Courses - Coming soon!

The Compass Academy staff is excited to announce that we will begin offering Block D courses to students who are interested starting in 2nd quarter. Some options that may be offered during 2nd quarter include explorations of 3D printing, robotics, and computer programming. More information will be shared next week.

Extracurricular Clubs & Activities

Extracurricular activities for students at Compass Academy will start in October. Students were surveyed recently to determine the level of interest in clubs and the types of activities that would be appealing to the greatest number of students. Many enthusiastic responses conveyed to us that our students are eager to build connections to Compass outside of the classroom.

To that end, we are in the process of planning for multiple student clubs to begin meeting next month. Special events, such as dances, competitions, and a talent show, were also suggested in survey responses. Students on Compass Council and those who join the SPTO will be instrumental in planning for this year's student events.

Fall PSAT Testing

The Fall PSAT date is October 13th. 9th grade students will be taking College Board's PSAT 8/9. This will be an online exam and students will need their Chromebooks.

10th and 11th grade students will be taking College Board's PSAT/NMSQT exam in the traditional paper and pencil format.

All Compass Academy 9th-11th grade students will take the PSAT at their home high school. The test is on a Wednesday, so students who do not typically attend classes at their home high school will have the option to take district transportation to and from East or North that day.

More information about this will be shared as we get closer to the testing day.

Work-Based Learning & Community Partners

Would you like to partner with Compass Academy to support one of our work-based learning initiatives? We are eager to partner with families and community members to plan events, coordinate career-oriented speakers, and connect students with work-based and other learning opportunities.

Here are two ways you can get involved now:

  • We will be starting our Speaker Series next month. This will entail volunteers from various career fields taking 45 minutes of their time on a Wednesday to participate in a Zoom Q & A session with interested Compass Academy students. We want as many career fields represented as possible! If you are interested in being one of our speakers, please complete this Google form and Jackie Nilles, our Work-Based Learning Specialist, will be in touch with you soon to discuss next steps.
  • If your place of employment is interested in offering Compass Academy students the opportunity to take a workplace tour or engage in job shadowing, please complete this Google form and either Jackie or I will follow up with you within the next two weeks to discuss options and next steps.

Financial Aid Night

The D303 Financial Aid Night will be hosted on Monday, September 27th beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Norris Cultural Arts Center (NCAC) at St. Charles East HS. Mary Crowe from Elgin Community College’s Financial Aid Office will be on hand to provide an overview of the college financial aid process and to answer questions from the audience. This event is open to all students and parents.
