Happy April!

Hello! April is such a busy time for all of us, with the last round of ISTEP+ and the end of the year quickly approaching, but we hope you are finding time to rejuvenate and reflect as well. It's easy to get lost in the fog and frenzy of busyness and stress, but remember that over the past 8 months, you've changed the lives of the children in your classroom. You've challenged and inspired them, and I'm sure they've done the same for you!

Thank you for investing your time and hearts in Indiana children. You're a world-changer!

Why Teach Poetry

Poetry can be polarizing at times, even in a community of ELA teachers. Some people love it, and some people hate it. Whether it's cultivating empathy, using constraints to force more precise vocabulary use, or improving public speaking skills, the benefits of teaching poetry are undeniable.

If you find that poetry has gotten lost in the shuffle of teaching the enormous amount of material you're charged with, read this teacher's account of how he rediscovered the power of poetry in his English classroom.

Community Spotlight

Ashley Mitsch

Ashley's second grade students participate in a "book selfie" where they have choice in picking any book for the week. On Fridays, students log in to Padlet to create a book review with the title and their favorite part. Components such as fiction or nonfiction and the author's purpose are included. As her students develop more skills, they build on to their book reviews. "Book Selfies" are printed and displayed on a bulletin board in the classroom. When students come in on Monday, they view their friends' recommendations for a book to read for that week. The IDOE values the expertise of Hoosier educators and would like your help to develop the literacy framework, a standards-based tool to support achievement. We are seeking motivated educators who have at least 3 years of teaching experience at their current grade level and experience creating formative assessments. Please note, we have limited space and are searching for statewide representation. Additionally, we need secondary teachers from all content areas, so please feel free to share with your colleagues.
