Year 6 Newsletter
Term 1 - 25th August, 2017
Welcome to Year 6!
PSE Connections within our unit of inquiry:
Year 6 Leadership Roles
Applications, presentations and elections for our Year 6 student leadership positions have begun! Applications for our House Captain positions have been shortlisted and displayed for voters to read and choose which candidate they would like to represent their house. Shortlisted House Captains will be presenting to their Y5 and 6 peers at House assemblies on Monday and elections will be held next Thursday 31st August.
As Y6 leaders we will consider:
How an effective group can accomplish more than a set of individuals; how communities and societies have their own norms, rules and regulations; and how people can extend and challenge their current understandings by engaging with the ideas and perspectives of others.
Unit of Inquiry;
Central Idea: Leadership influences the members of a community
Lines of Inquiry:
Responsibilities of leaders and the communities (responsibility)
Representation of opinions within a community (perspective)
How societal decision-making has an impact on communities (causation)
In Social Studies we are focusing on the strand of “Human systems and economic activities”. We will be considering the roles and responsibilities of leaders, the impact of the ways leaders exercise their leadership, and also exploring the distribution of power and authority within personal, regional and global contexts. Students will consider “circles of viewpoints” when discussing the different perspective’s people have. We will be using the Thinking Hats to determine the possibilities and challenges around different types of leadership and the decisions leaders make. Finally, students will have the opportunity to inquire into a leader of their choice and share their interpretation of the approaches, decisions and impact of the decisions made by this person.
Coming up: Individual presentations of their personal inquiries into leaders and systems.
English:
We will be revisiting the essential elements of writing narrative texts, and extending these skills as we develop ourselves as authors.
Coming up: Explanations
Maths:
As this is the start of the year we will be focusing on and revisiting our core number skills, with a specific focus on place value: this includes recognising, ordering, comparing and using positive and negative numbers.
Coming up: Handling real life data
Scholastic Reading Club Catalogues
This week your child will have brought home some brochures for you to browse and order books from if you wish. Scholastic sell a variety of books for all ages and are a supplier of books for our library. All completed orders must be returned to school along with a cheque for the total amount written out to Scholastic Hong Kong Limited. Order forms can be handed in to the office or to the class teacher no later than Monday 4th September. We would also like to emphasise that any orders you place will generate Scholastic Reading Club credits for Kennedy School. Once we receive all the ordered books, we will deliver them to your child's classroom for your child to take home. If you have any queries in regards to this, please don't hesitate to email library@kennedy.edu.hk.
