8th Grade & Beyond

Relevant Info. to Prepare Your 8th Grader for the Future....

1 Quarter Down and 3 More to Go!

First quarter ended October 27th, and we are one fourth of the year closer to our 8th graders becoming high school freshman! If you have not talked to your child about setting goals for the remainder of the school year, now would be a great time to do so! As they are thinking about what type of goals to set, remind them that their goals need to be S.M.A.R.T. (Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Relevant-Timely). When establishing and pursuing their goals, it's also important to have an accountability partner. They should consider you (their parents), a reliable friend/peer or even a mentor to serve in this role. If they need help getting started, share your experience with setting and accomplishing goals; and remember their grade level counselor is just a "LET'S TALK" slip away!
The Patriots celebrated National Career Day November 12th! The students had an awesome experience as they learned about various careers that exist in our world of work! We will celebrate careers throughout the remainder of the month and school year! If you , another relative or neighbor would like to come and speak to one of your child's classes and share your career journey, please let your child's grade level counselor or administrator know!

Greetings from Mrs. Dunton-Forbes

This year is the year that will conclude your child's middle school experience! The nervous little 6th grader that he/she once was two years ago, is now a full fledge teenager who will be making another BIG TRANSITION in the next few months. There are several things that we (home and school) will need to do to ensure that they have every opportunity to prepare for what lies ahead. Hence, the implementation of this newsletter! This is one of a few platforms that I will utilize to keep you apprised of the "NEED TO KNOW" details (from a Professional School Counselor's perspective) that will enable us to work together on preparing your child for what lies ahead. If you have questions about the information provided, please don't hesitate to contact me via phone or email.

8th grade students received their EXPLORE assessment results during the week of November 12th! The purpose of this assessment is to:

  1. Serve as a baseline measure of academic progress toward college and career readiness.
  2. Help 8th grade students build high school course plans.
  3. Assess academic progress, areas that need extra help, suggestions for improving skills, and careers that match the students interests.
  4. Provide early indicators of whether students are on track for college, with time to intervene and focus on areas of need.

Please take a moment to review your child's assessment results. If you have questions about the results, please contact Mrs. Dunton-Forbes (8th grade Counselor) or Ms. Mayo (Testing Coordinator).
