Autumn Greetings!
It is a beautiful time to live in Northern Rhode Island! The foliage is breathtaking! We are coming to the end of our 2nd full month of school. By this time, most students & parents are busy juggling homework, after school sports and activities. Vaping... Where our schools stand
Governor Raimondo recently banned the sale of flavored e-cigarettes in the state. The vaping ban came after a nationwide increase in vaping-related illnesses and deaths and a day after Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker instituted a four-month ban on the sale of all vaping products in Massachusetts.
We urge parents to discuss vaping and the health impacts it may have, with your children. For more information local schools' responses to the vaping ban, click HERE!
The Cumberland, Lincoln and North Smithfield Prevention Coalitions are working directly with the Administrations in these districts to help "curb" e-cigarette use among youth. The Coalitions are funding the program, "Vape Educate", for local middle & high schools. VapeEducate is an online course originally designed to be completed by middle and high school students. However, it most certainly can be beneficial to anyone interested in learning more about e-cigarettes, vaping and Juuling. It can also be used as an educational program for teachers, parents, and other community members. The program is designed to be used as a tool which provides supplemental material to educate students about vaping.
Think Fast, North Smithfield High School!
North Smithfield High School received a grant from the Rhode Island DOT and the North Smithfield Prevention Coalition to bring the “THINKFAST Interactive Teen Driving Safety program” to NSHS. Students (and teachers) had a blast competing while learning about driving safety. ThinkFast® was developed in 1997 as a program that would non-intrusively expose participants to and educate them on important information on hard-to-tackle topics, i.e. the consequences of underage drinking, drug use, bullying, traffic safety, distracted driving, etc., while simultaneously entertaining them in a safe, relaxed and fun environment.
Red Ribbon Week at CHS!!!!
Congrats NSMS!!!
North Smithfield Middle School was recently awarded a $17,000 Opioid Community Solutions Grant from the Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition geared toward preventing drug use among young people. The grant will fund a new after-school club called “Fitness Not Fixes” that will offer fitness sessions while also discussing the dangers of drug use and teaching students life skills to improve their overall health.
The two topics, according to LaBossiere, go together more than some might think. In his grant application, he points to research that shows students who exercise have a lowered risk of using drugs, particularly opioids.
In addition to his stipend and curriculum development, the grant will fund 12 new pieces of cardio equipment. The equipment, which includes bikes, ski machines and rowing machines, are well suited for the age group, he said, and will allow the school to create a cardio room specifically for club use.
