Harrowsmith PS Weekly Update
January 19, 2024
Good Afternoon Harrowsmith Families.
As winter makes an appearance, please be sure to provide additional clothing for especially our
younger students. Sock and mitts often get wet during the day making them uncomfortable to be put back on. I would always suggest layering clothing as this is the best way to
ensure comfort in the changing weather.
In Fall 2023, the Ministry of Education announced that reporting on elementary literacy
achievement would be comprised of one mark, similar to elementary mathematics and
secondary literacy. There are four sections to the new curriculum; Literacy Connections and
Applications, Foundations of Language, Reading Comprehension: Reading and Responding to
Texts and Composition: Expressing Ideas and Creating Texts. There is also an Appendix A,
Language Foundations Continuum for Reading and Writing (Grades 1-4), Overall Expectation
B2. This section includes; Phonemic Awareness, Alphabetic Knowledge, Phonics, Word level
Reading and Spelling, Vocabulary and Reading Fluency. The Ministry of Education and the
Board have given teachers direction on how the curriculum is to be assessed and marked.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
We are excited to inform you that auditions for The Hysterical History of the Trojan War have
been taking place throughout the week.
Please mark your calendars, - evening shows for this event will occur on
Thursday April 18th and Friday April 20th, at 7:00.

KFL&A Dental Screening - Grades JK, SK, 2 & 7 - February 20th to 22nd
Who will screen your child's teeth?
School Dental Screening is done in all elementary schools by a registered dental hygienist and a certified dental assistance from KFL&A Public Health.
The grades to be screened at our school will be JK, SK, 2 & 7 as well as some students with dental concerns.
What does dental screening look like?
The screeening is a quick look in to the mouth with a sterilized mouth mirror, using all appropriate infection control practices.
What happens if we see a student with a dental problem?
Each student who is screeened gets a card to take home that shows the results of the screening. Parents are contacted if their child has a dental problem that needs to be treated. Funding for this treatment may be provided to eligible children through the Health Smiles Ontario (HSO) program.
Why is dental screening important?
- To identify dental problems that could lead to pain or infection and need to be treated by a dentist
- To help families access needed dental treatment
- To monitor dental disease in our area and to use this information to plan programs and services for children in our communities.
Why do we screen your child's teeth?
Dental screening is requried each year in all elementary schools under Ontario Regulation 570, School Health Programs and Services, Health Protection and Promotion Act.
What to do if you do not want your child to be screened?
If you do not want your child to be screened this school year, please tell us in writing. Include your child's full name, school & grade. Mail to: KFL&A Public Health, Dental Health Program, 221 Portsmouth Ave., Kingston, ON, K7M 1V5
