The students in Room 16 are progressing as individuals and as a class. They interact positively and support each other in their growth. The students are improving their decoding and encoding skills through practice with letter tiles and dry erase boards. They enjoy opportunities to read independently and are eager to replenish their bag of “just right” books each week. Through choral and echo reading, the class practices reading fluently and with expression.
We plan to embark on another Readers’ Theater activity for the third marking period. This project will provide many opportunities for repeated reading practice as the students increase their oral reading fluency and expression.
All the students are strengthening their math fact fluency by daily sessions on Xtra Math. First grade will soon be learning about place value and comparison while second grade will be working on fact strategies. Both groups enjoy regular opportunities to apply and practice their math skills using a variety of math games in the classroom. Please help your child learn the “Friends of 10” and the “Doubles Facts.” Students have the opportunity to gain membership in those school “clubs” each Monday afternoon.
In Writing, we have been working on giving support for our opinions. The students have been challenged to use detail when writing reasons for their opinions. We will begin our nonfiction writing unit in the third marking period.
Our class will be joining Mrs. Durham’s class for some exciting health and nutrition lessons provided through Rutgers University! We are looking forward to those experiences.
Thank you for all you do to support your child’s learning. We will continue to work together to ensure a successful school year.
Mrs. Warrington's Room
Mrs.Warrington’s class has been very busy since the beginning of December! They celebrated the start of the Winter Holiday break by having a New Year’s Eve party. The students did a countdown at noon while wearing hats and leis. We hope our celebration was not too loud!
The class has been studying nouns, adjectives, and open and closed syllables. They have been using their new skills to write descriptive narrative stories and describe famous places. They are working hard to make sure their stories will have plenty of describing words so their readers can make a colorful picture in their minds!
During math time, the students have been learning how to solve word problems and their multiplication facts! They have been watching multiplication videos to make learning easier and fun! They work hard daily counting coins and purchasing prizes from our prize box.
In Science, the 5th grade students have recently completed studying about volcanoes and earthquakes. They erupted a volcano and simulated an earthquake using Oreos! They will learn about animal life cycles, water cycle, and rocks and minerals in the next chapters. Miss Curry has been doing many fun experiments with the 3rd graders as they are learning about matter, physical and chemical changes. Their favorite was making a root beer float! Yummy!
In Social Studies, the 5th graders have been learning about The American Revolution. They did an awesome project retracing the footsteps to the start of the Revolutionary War. We look forward to researching about famous African Americans during Black History month! We can't wait to make trading cards as part of the unit.
Mrs. Warrington’s class enjoys Friday Fun! They have decorated gingerbread cookies, played games, and created many other winter crafts. The tree outside our room now has snow on it!! We love to learn while having fun!
The 4th grade students just finished a science unit on Matter: Solids, Liquids, Gases. All the students are now “Matter” experts. We just began our Water Cycle Unit, and we will be doing some fun experiments. Everyone can’t wait to get started! “Bill Nye, here we come!”
