NECP Updates
November 7, 2021, #4
Good Morning NECP Families!
Also did you know that during the Covid-19 school closure NECP staff put an AMAZING amount of work into activities that we posted to our Facebook Page. There are so many videos of music, books, activities paired with visuals, etc... Please utilize that resource, especially great for a rainy day or an upcoming day with a cold white substance falling from the sky (I just can't say it!). ~Kathleen

Tips from NECP Related Service Professionals
Preschool provides the perfect opportunity for your child to develop many age-appropriate independent self-help skills. This includes entering the building, putting items in their cubby, opening and eating snack and lunch, cleaning up toys and lunch, managing clothing at school, washing hands, and preparing to leave school. We encourage you to think about how to help your child to be independent.
One way to foster independence: Does your child have a lunch bag that they can open and close her/himself? If your child has difficulty with the zipper, you can add a key ring to make it easier to open and close. Can your child open and close all containers in their snack/lunch bag? We recommend using ZIPPER zip lock bags (not the bags that need to be lined up and pushed together to close). If you prefer to pack snack/lunch in reusable containers, try out the container to be sure that the strength demands of the container are appropriate for a preschool-aged child.
Another idea: Preschoolers love to help in the kitchen. Using a rolling pin to press out cookie dough or pie crust, using cookie cutters to make cookies, and pouring liquids out of measuring cups is not only fun, but reinforces using two hands together, counting, and labelling, all wonderful preschool skills. You can also use the opportunity to talk about safety around a hot oven, using blenders and cutting.

Pass the word - NECP is enrolling for the 2022-2023 school year!
NECP is now accepting applications for our community peers for the 2022-2023 school year. Please note we will be moving into our new site at 687 Watertown Street during the 2022-2023 school year! So exciting! Find the application here under "application process."
*Current community peers who will be returning for the 2022-2023 school year will enroll via a different process. Keep on the look out for information from the NECP office in November 2021.
PASS THE WORD - PRESCHOOL DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING
NECP conducts Preschool Developmental Screenings for children ages 3 to 5 years old in an effort to identify children who may have a disability and are in need of special education support. It is designed to review a child’s development and assist in the identification of children who should be referred for further evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services. This is a free and optional service for Newton residents only.
The screenings will be conducted monthly starting in October of the 2021-2022 school year. If a student is already at NECP they do not need to attend this screening but if you have a friend who is concerned about their child's development, have them reach out!
