Great Britain, the Colonial Power
India was colonized by Great Britain for nearly two hundred years, but by the early 1900s, British control began to weaken.
Mohandas Gandhi Leads a Movement
In the early 1900s, nationalism began to grow and Indians wanted to be free from British rule. Gandhi led a peaceful struggle for Indian independence from her colonial power.
Gandhi's efforts were successful and in 1947, India gained her independence from Great Britain. The British found that maintaining India as a colony was too expensive, especially after World War II left their economy in ruin.
