Writing Workshop Enables Individualized Instruction
Workshop structure provides substantial time for whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction to students daily.Teachers plan strategic curriculum specific to the students in the room, moving students towards appropriate whole-group goals (standards) while simultaneously responding to individual needs. Much like an athletic coach considers, What does this player need to know for this Saturday’s game in order to play the best she can at thisstage of her development, workshop teachers strategically plan what to teach the whole class and what to teach each individual writer to enable him to produce the best text he can in each genre studied throughout the year. In writing workshop, all students can be successful—including the most advanced and most challenged students, two extremes often ill- served by other curriculums that teach to the median.

Library Volunteers
Library volunteers are needed to help with shelving and checking in books in our TCE Library. Volunteering in the library is fun and the schedule is flexible! If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Hopper, TCE Librarian (lhopper@hse.k12.in.us).
*A safe visitor background check is required for all school volunteers. For more information on background checks, visit https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering.

We Are Learning...
Reading
In reading this week we focused on what to do when we run into a keyword that we don't know. We have lots of ways to unlock it. We use the whole page and everything we know about the topic to figure out what it probably means. We can play around with the word and find a way to unlock it! Once the words are unlocked, the kids are able to reread the books they are reading more smoothly. We also learned more about how when we "talk at the talk, we can walk the walk". We noticed that the more we learn about a topic, the more we start talking like experts about that topic. We talked with partners about the keywords that we are learning within our nonfiction books and tried to "talk the talk" with our friends!
Writing
This week in writing we continued our focus on writing to an audience! The kids used their writing checklists and worked on ways to write more powerful pieces. We know as writers, kids can focus on writing their words on the page and then can go back and fix up their spelling. We spent some time looking at words that we already know and use those words to help us spell the words that we want in our writing. We also know that writers can write several different books on the same topic. And we talked about how writers can look at mentor texts to see how they use nonfiction craft moves. We looked again at our writing to see how we could make our books like theirs!
Word Study
Math
This week in math we began our study of subtraction with regrouping! The kids were excited to work on this new skill. Please review the work being sent home to make sure that your child understands this concept!
Inquiry - Rabbits
Our Mystery Doug this week was, "Could a Mountain turn into a volcano?". Ask your child what they learned!
