Comments:
Coming into the race, we figured the race would come down to Baldwin, Buhler and us again like it has for the top 3 spots the last two seasons. However, we weren’t discounting Winfield and Louisburg either. So, we figured there were 5 good teams battling for the top spots. Our race plan today was a break from our normal today as we had to get out more aggressively if we wanted to push Baldwin for a state championship. Watching the early part of the race unfold, I felt like we did what we needed to do and we put ourselves in a good position to battle for the win. In the end, we fell a little bit short. However, we ran much better versus Baldwin and Louisburg from a week ago at regionals, and with the adversity faced through the season, we are definitely pleased with the runner up finish.
Individually, we were led again by freshman Sydney Owens. The individual state title belonged to (now) 4 time state champion from Chapman Taylor Briggs who won by nearly 2 minutes. So, the entire field knew this was a “best of the rest” type of race. Sydney did a great job taking hold of that from the start. After a few hundred meters, Sydney was in 2nd position and never gave it up... slowly extending her lead on that position the entire race. By finishing in the top 20, Sydney earned all-state honors this season. Joining her as an all-state runner, is junior Mackenzie Mayer. Mackenzie has consistently been our hardest worker all season - even dating back to quarantine in the spring. She has been working hard putting in the miles for the past eight months and today was the reward for all that effort. The rest of our pack did a great job securing the 2nd place finish for the team. Junior Stella Whalen had the best race of her career today earning our only season best time on the day and just narrowly missing top 20 status. Maya and Rachel also put in great races today keeping our pack time very small and making it hard for any other teams to try and take our 2nd place finish away from us. After some time to reflect on this team, I believe their efforts today can’t be understated.
Entering the season, we expected to lose only two girls from last year’s varsity team that ran at state. However, due to quarantine and injury, today’s team only had three girls running on it that ran at state a year ago. Our depth has always been a major strength of our team and that fact illustrates our team depth. Also, last year’s three alternates on our state roster, all were on this year’s state team, finishing 3rd, 5th, and 6th for us today. I’m so proud of those girls to use that experience last year as a motivator to keep pushing hard to get to the point today where they were racing and contributing on the state team. The last three years at the state meet the girls have finished 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd... both Maya and Melia have been members of all three of those teams.
Despite all the limitations and hardships placed on us this year due to Covid, this has been a season to remember. I can’t be more proud of how it all went down and ended today. This is a team I will miss dearly in the offseason as I look forward to next season and making a run at the top prize with these girls again.

Comments:
We have some mixed feelings on the outcome of the race today. Looking at the rest of the 4A XC programs, we had figured that there were five teams with separation on the field... and that played out like predicted today. But, we believed we had a good shot at being 6th today, and positioning ourselves as the best team of the rest of the field. Being the youngest team in the race we think that is a great position to be in and sets us up nicely for next season. At quick glance, it’s easy to see we fell short of that goal today. However, our top runner over the last three races unfortunately did not finish today and that added about 50 points to our team score. You take that into account, and we are easily in 6th place - putting us just where we wanted to be. So, the takeaways as a team are, we are better than our place indicates, and this is a young team bringing everyone back... we will be improved next year.
Individually, we were led today by Junior Cody Loganbill. Cody put together his best race of the season on a difficult course with some strong winds today. Cody ran a 9 second season best time today and was our only boy to finish in the top 20 and earn a medal and all-state honors. Traeger and Jonas also ran solid races... keeping the time gap from Cody to themselves under a minute, which has been pretty customary all season. Sophomore Ethan Gales also put in a great performance today, finishing only seconds off of his best time on the season and backing up a big personal best a week ago on a much harder course.
As already mentioned, this is a young team that has now got a couple of seasons of state meet experience under us. We return all 7 runners from the state team (the only team in the state to do that) and we have JV runners who are going to be pushing to make a varsity spot next year. The future is bright for this team and I believe they will join the girls in competing for a state trophy next season.
Scholars Bowl - Coach Garrison
Eudora competed at the Varsity and Junior Varsity Bonner Springs Virtual Scholars Bowl tournaments.
Our Varsity squad scored 590 points on the evening finishing 4th place in their pool and falling just short of earning a medal. It was an egalitarian affair. Captain Sr. Alex Vonderbrink, Sr. Rebekah Brown, Sr. Joey Gales, and So. Emiri White finished the night with 120 points each. So. Natalie Karten finished the night with 110 points.
Our JV squad scored a whopping 750 points on the night among only 3 competitors earning a 3rd place medal! Captain So. Sophia Nichols finished with 240 points, Natalie Karten finished with 250 points, and Emiri White finished with 260 points.
Varsity Football - Coach Hayden
The Eudora Cardinals defeated the Piper Pirates Friday by a score of 16-15. This was Eudora’s first playoff win since 2015. It was an exciting back and forth game that came down to the last 50 seconds. The coaching staff had told the team all year long to keep pounding the stone and getting better. With our regular season schedule, we knew our record would not reflect the type of team we are. We knew that we would be tough come playoff time because of the competition we have faced.
The Cardinals were down 0-15 going into the 4th quarter but the boys never gave up faith. Piper was only able to find the endzone after two big plays that the Cardinals made mistakes on. The Cardinal offense was able to move the ball all game, but was not able to convert on 2 fourth downs in Piper’s territory. This led the coaching staff to believe that the game was still theirs to win.
Kale Hammerschmidt(10) intercepted a ball and took it to the 5 yard line to get the Cardinals going in the 4th. This was the same pass concept that Piper converted earlier in the game to get a 4th down conversion, and Kale was not going to be fooled this time. After a Zeke Reazin (12) touchdown run, and a Brayden Beerbower (11) two point conversion, the Cardinals were down 8-15. The team kept battling, eventually forcing Piper into a 4th and 10 situation with 6:00 left in the game. Piper punted the ball away, thinking that they could get a stop and win the game. Eudora was able to use a 5 minute, 12 play 65 yard drive to score with only 50 seconds on the clock. Needing a 2 point conversion to win, or an extra point kick to tie, the Cardinal coaching staff decided that they had battled this hard to win, not tie. Brayden Beerbower was given a toss and some great blocking by Braylen Hoobler(9) and Silas Etter (11) on the edge sprung Brayden for the 2 point conversion, putting the Cardinals up 16-15.
On the ensuing Kickoff, Will Schreiner (12) was able to strip the ball and Kale Hammerschmidt was able to jump on the ball. The Cardinals were able to kneel the ball out and seal the victory.
Offensively, the Cardinals ended the game with 274 yards rushing. Brayden Beerbower led the team with 169 yards on 39 carries. This brings Brayden’s total to 1,012 rushing yards on the season while the team has 1,971 for the year. Zeke Reazin added 64 yards rushing while Matt Evans (12) and Cael Lynch (12) each had 22 yards. Matt earned his rushing yards on one play, a fake punt to keep a drive going.
Defensively, the Cards were great all night, allowing only two big plays. The Defense is only allowing 16 points per game in the last 5 games and is really starting to play with some confidence. Nate Criqui(12) was once again great on the defensive line, with 8 tackles and 2 tackles for a loss. Gage Hayden(11) was a lock down corner for the whole game, not allowing a pass to his man and making sure that we could focus on stopping the run. Devon White was great at his nose guard position, adding 5 tackles as well. Cael Lynch ended the game with 13 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. This brings his total to 139 tackles for the year, good enough to lead the state of Kansas and average over 15 tackles per game.
The Cardinals take on Basehor Linwood Friday for a shot at winning a Regional Championship. This should be a great game and we are excited to have another opportunity to compete.
Varsity Soccer - Coach Erpelding
@ Seabury (but really at EHS)
Last Wednesday's Regional game was a ton of fun! I have been part of a lot of playoff games and no matter how much the butterflies get going before the game the intensity and emotions of the game is so worth it. It doesn't matter who you play, where you play, or when you play. The experience of playoff games is amazing! During the season you might get three or four games that have that same feeling but you always know there is a tomorrow. In the playoffs, there may not be a tomorrow. Watching kids lay it on the line is so darn fun to watch that it is addicting. The newfound passion, the energy, the love, the fun, the play for each other. It is all truly amazing!
All of those things held true last night. It was the first time that I believe the boys truly played for each other. That they were not going to be the one that let us down or be the one that looked into their teammates' eyes and tell them "I could have given more" When you have all 22 guys doing that, they are so so so tough to beat. From the opening kick, we completely outplayed Seabury took it right to them. They couldn't play at our level. Not even remotely! We outshot them 25 to their 7. We had 14 shots on frame to their 3. The scoreboard read 2-1 at the end of the game. But anybody that was there, knew that game wasn't as close as the score indicated. Well except maybe the Seabury fans. We dominated in every facet of the game. Our defense was fantastic, our middle completely dominated the game, our guys up top were extremely tough to mark. Man, it was fun to watch! Senior Jace McCormick got us on the board when senior Keaton Herron turned them over at half took three hard dribbles to get away and found Jace cutting in between their leftback and centerback. Keaton passed Jace the ball and Jace had a perfect first touch with the left and took another touch with the right and composed himself and buried a shot into the lower-left corner! This goal gave us a lot of momentum going into halftime and the second half. We very easily could have been up 4-0 at the half. The second half was much of the same. Senior Colby Lawhorn got the second goal about midway through the second half. Senior Dylan Meier played a perfect ball in that found Jace on the back post. Jace headed the ball back across the goal in which Colby was running in and put the ball away. We had several more chances that just didn't go in and their keeper to make 12 saves to keep them in the game. Our keepers touched the ball a total of 9 times and only had to make 3 saves. Our Defense was that good! Shout out to seniors Isaac Lewis, Dakota Heston, Daniel Grosdidier, Dylan Meier, and Holden Andrews. Seniors Brenton Ormsby and Devon Moncrief did what they needed to do when they had to! Seabury got one back late in the game with a set piece from about 20 out. The kid hit a great shot and scored. The game got chippy down the stretch but I thought our guys held their composure together pretty good. Playoffs are all about survive and advance and we did that in a dominating fashion.
@ Baldwin (Regional Championship)
This one may be the toughest article I have had to write in awhile. Not because we lost but because we are losing 21 seniors, most of which I have coached for 5 years now. It just wasn't our day. We were a step slow most of the game but when we weren't we did some really good things. The score ended 3-0 but the game was closer than the score indicated. I believe if we put 1 goal away, then we would have really got ourselves going. Credit to Baldwin, they were strong enough to stop any chance we created. They are a strong side for sure and had the better day.

Cardinal Corps - Team Gear!
Hello Eudora Schools students, parents, and supporters --
The Cardinal Corps is so excited to announce our latest project, a “One Team” store! The Cardinal Corps is an organization here at Eudora that focuses on promoting positive school climate and culture through four key relationships: student to student, student to community, student to building, and student to teacher.
Our motto is “One Team,” for we believe in the importance of bringing people together. We hope that you believe in this message just as much as the Cardinal Corps does! And, now that you have some background on who we are and what we do, we ask that you consider helping us succeed in launching our “One Team” store!
This store includes generic Eudora items and gear for everyone. Please consider purchasing a few items; all proceeds will go right back into our school and Cardinal Corps initiatives in order to make a positive impact on the people of Eudora! All gear would make great gift ideas and most orders should get in just in time for the holidays.
The link to the store is attached in this email. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider the impact you can make on Eudora Schools! The one-line store will close on election day (Tuesday, Nov 3). So please get your orders in soon. #oneteam!!!
