Full of Gratitude in November!
We are very grateful for each and every one of you, our students and our school! This month we are working on showing everyone that we learn and work with that we care about them, respect them and are grateful for their friendship and leadership. As students, our third graders are working on collaborative learning while recognizing and appreciating the strengths inside each and everyone of us.
Please remember to send your child in layers as we move into the colder temperatures. The temperatures fluctuate in the building and some rooms are chillier than others. Also, it is very important that the students have appropriate clothing for the outdoor temperatures, as we will try to get them out to run around at recess as long as there is no precipitation and it is above 25 degrees, factoring in the windchill.
We are looking forward to Parent-Teacher Conferences on Friday, November 17th, Monday, November 20th, and Tuesday, November 21st. Please be sure to sign up for a conference time. We would like to meet with each and every parent during fall conferences.
Thank you for all your support! We could not do this without you!
A Huge Thank You!
The gentlemen took a few moments to explain to the students that the Rotary Club is a service organization in Frederick County. Each year, they provide third graders with their own personal dictionaries that they can use in class and/or take home and use from now through college.
This is the third year SRES has received these dictionaries and I must say the students love them! At this time of digital resources, it is amazing to see the awe and excitement our students have over getting their hands on actual dictionaries that they can keep!

Our Weeks Ahead...
Thursday, November 8 - Tuesday, November 21, 2017
Students will be continuing to work on understanding organisms and how they are similar. Specifically students will be learning about inherited traits, varying characteristics of organisms, fossils and animal adaptations and survival. We will be using dance and drama techniques to explore more about animals and their adaptations.
Math--
We are continuing to work on understanding fractions as parts of a whole and to be able to partition shapes into equal pieces. Students will be applying their understanding to more complex problems. Also, students will begin to explore equivalent fractions and comparing fractions using bar models and number lines.
Reading --
The students are continuing to work on reading and comprehending informational texts. Students are still working to identify content and vocabulary, identify the purpose of text features, and identify the main idea and supporting details. Once the students are able to identify important features of informational writing they will work on summarizing the text they have read. We will work on encouraging close reading strategies and using text evidence to support their reasoning when asking and answering questions.
Writing --
Students will be wrapping up their poetry writing this week. The students are currently working to collect their original poems into their online portfolio. Please continue to stay tuned for the Annual 3rd Grade Poetry Slam date and time. Monday the students will begin writing to inform the reader. This will continue for several weeks as we explore and learn the structures of informational writing.
