Social Media Use and Mental Health
At OMS, we have started to see an increase of students communicating with each other over social media platforms (Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok etc.). While these may sound like foreign terms to us, they are apps that our students use everyday. Social media can provide a very positive experience when open conversations around expectations and boundaries are set, parents/guardians are monitoring use, and limits are placed. Social media can also cause issues when student use is not regulated. The National Online Safety organization provides free resources for students and parents about different social media apps, issues to be aware of and how to start conversations with your child. For the next month we will be providing a resource of the week, that we hope you find helpful. Take a peek below to see the benefits and consequences of student social media use!

SUCCESSFUL HAPPENING
Thank you, Mrs. Gerdes, for leading our Freshman class through CPR this week. In cardiac arrest, every second counts! For those who collapse at home, that often means a family member who is treated with CPR within the first few minutes doubles or even triples their chances of survival. That’s why it’s so important for everyone to know CPR—including our teenagers, who are highly capable of delivering lifesaving care.
The composting program is saving a lot of waste. We want to thank all the staff and students for helping compost food! The first week back to school we composted an average of 79.86 pounds of food daily. Each week the amount composting is decreasing. Last week we composted an average of 60.41 pounds per day. After lunch the waste compost buckets are moved to the outside bins added is shredded paper, (natural properties of paper wick away moisture from decomposing organic materials, helping to break down materials faster and prevent any odors or leakage issues. The end result from the decomposition will be a black organic material we can use in the school garden this Spring.
