The 19th Amendment and the women who made it a reality

  • The Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution prohibits any United States citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of gender
  • The 19th amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920
  • Women who advocated for women's suffrage which lead to the 19th amendment were women like Susan B Anthony and Jane Addams
  • This was a major step/victory for progressives because it gave everyone the right to vote

The 18th Amendment and the people who advocated for it

  • The Eighteenth Amendment (Amendment XVIII) of the United States Constitution effectively established the prohibition of alcoholic beverages in the United States by declaring illegal the production, transport, and sale of alcohol
  • The 18th amendment was passed on January 16, 1919
  • The 18th amendment was passed because of the support of the temperance movement,religious organizations, and people like Carrie Nations who took a strong stance against alcohol
  • The 18th Amendment eventually failed because of the large amount of crime caused by gangs running liquor around the country which lead to the 18th amendment being repealed by the 21st amendment
