The Language of Kindness from "The Self-Awakened Child" Series by Jonathan Wolff

  • When I care about how other people feel as much as I care about my own feelings, I am being kind.
  • When I am a good friend to others-- to people, to animals, and plants-- and help them be the best they can be, I am being kind.
  • When I treat myself, other people, animals, and plants gently and with love, I am being kind.

Fall Picture Day

Picture Day will be held on Friday, September 3rd. A make-up day will be scheduled at later date for any students not in the building on this day.

These photos will be used in the 2021/2022 Ellis yearbook and on student ID tags.

Families will also have an option to purchase the pictures, if wanted, and part of the proceeds will be donated directly back to our school.

This is a FREE Dress Up Day! Students should follow the "Acceptable Dress for Non-Uniform Days" guidelines listed on page 17 of the 2021-2022 SCCPSS Student Code of Conduct (which is located the SCCPSS/Ellis websites) and bring their best SMILE.

Blue Dismissal Signs/Tickets

This year, we require a blue car rider dismissal sign with your student(s) name(s) to be displayed in the front passenger window/dashboard at dismissal. Please display this sign in the morning at arrival as well to help our staff identify students, as needed.

If you need any additional blue dismissal car rider signs OR blue walker tickets, please email your student's teacher and they will send those home with your student.

Thank you for your assistance in helping us ensure a smooth, timely arrival/dismissal.

AMS Accreditation Committee

We need parents to join the Charles Ellis Montessori Academy Montessori Accreditation Committee! This is a great way to give back to the Charles Ellis community and ensure its legacy as an exceptional school in Savannah.

We are in the process of preparing for an application to become an Accredited Montessori School (this work began in 2016 but got derailed in 2020 by the pandemic). This is the most important step we can take to ensure that our children receive an authentic Montessori education experience. AMS is the "gold standard of Montessori School excellence;" only about 15% of Montessori schools are actually AMS-accredited.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, August 31 at 3:30pm via Zoom. If you are interested, please email Ms. Tanya at tanya.melville@sccpss.com, and she will send you a meeting link.

Circle Park Walker Safety Protocol

For the safety of Ellis students/parents, PLEASE do NOT stop at the intersection of Battey and 50th St. to pick up/drop off your student(s) at Circle Park (see area in yellow circle below). You should PARK your car around the circle or on a side street to let your children in/out of your car.

Thank you for your consideration of and your cooperation with this safety procedure.

2021/2022 Ellis Family Handbook

Please read the Ellis Family Handbook, which was updated on August 12th, thoroughly for operational procedures regarding:
  • Covid Protocols
  • Quarantine Learning Plans
  • Arrival/Dismissal
  • Uniforms
  • etc.

This can also be accessed for future reference on the Ellis school website on the Ellis Family Handbook page.

From the Clinic

For the health and safety of your student, please complete the 2021/2022 Ellis Student Medical Questionnaire regarding his/her medical conditions and/or allergies as soon as possible. This information will be an initial communication about the needs of your student and will be reviewed by the School Nurse. To ensure the proper care of your student, the information will be shared with the faculty and staff who interact with him/her and needs to be updated annually. Please complete a separate questionnaire for each of your students. Thank you for your help.

If your child is (or will be) absent for any reason, please email your child's teacher AND copy Nurse Chris on the email.

If your student is classified as a "Close Contact" with someone who has COVID-19 at school, you will receive a phone call from someone on the Ellis Contact Tracing team to pick them up immediately. When you pick up your student, you will be provided with a letter from Nurse Chris outlining further instructions including when your student will be allowed to return to the building. You can view that letter template on the Nurse's page of the Ellis school website for your future reference. It is also listed in the updated Ellis Family Handbook.

Welcome letter from Nurse Chris.

Parent Contact Information

It is imperative that we have up-to-date contact information for parents/guardians (including EMAIL addresses) in PowerSchool.

If you have access to PowerSchool with your parent account, please make sure that you have a valid email address (that you check regularly!) on file. If you do not have access to your parent account on PowerSchool, you can visit the SCCPSS website for information on how to obtain access.

If you don't have access to PowerSchool, you may email your student’s classroom teacher, provide them with your email address, and they will pass that information on to our student information specialists so that they can update your student’s account.

Device Distribution

**Update 8/27/2021**:

ATTN NEW ELLIS FAMILIES: If your student has joined Ellis in the past week or so, please complete the "Student Learning Device Loan Form" listed below (either the PDF OR the digital version) as soon as possible. You will still have the option to purchase the Family Protection Plan (FPP) for your student's device, but Ms. Lisa may need to add that option for you if you wish to pay for it online through School Cash Online. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Lisa (lisa.odonnell@sccpss.com).

We have distributed devices to ALL PreK-8th Grade students who returned the required paperwork. MOST teachers have kept those devices in the classroom this week as we have started district assessments. We want to make sure that the devices are at school and ready for those assessments. If/when your student starts bringing their device home, please note the following:

  1. They should use the device ONLY for work that is assigned to them by their teacher.
  2. They should bring the device back to school EVERY day and the device should be CHARGED. They will need the device for Explorations, research, assessments, and work assigned by their teacher.

If your family is in need of a HotSpot device, contact Ms. Lisa to see if you qualify.

Student Learning Device Loan Form and FPP Information (This form MUST be filled out by a parent/guardian for EVERY student)- You can fill out the digital version instead at this link.

**Please note: Per SCCPSS district policy, if your student has a fine still on their account for a damaged device or a lost charger from the 2020/2021 school year, they will not be allowed to check out a device until that fine is paid. Contact Ms. Lisa (lisa.odonnell@sccpss.com) so that you can make payment arrangements.**

Middle School Athletics

For Middle School Athletes:

**In order for students to be able to participate in any sports activities, all paperwork is to be turned in to Mr. Sean, Ellis Athletic Director, in Room 36.

Please fill out both the athletic paperwork 1 and 2.

Instructions:

Paperwork 1- Parents will fill out pages one and two and take them to the doctor to fill out pages three and four. *IMPORTANT* Ask for a sports physical NOT a regular physical- you will get in much quicker. Also, the minute clinic is a quick alternative.

Paperwork 2- Parents will fill out all pages and sign all documents, then have the student sign all documents.

It is HOT outside!

Your student needs to have a water bottle (labeled with their name) at school so they can stay hydrated. We still have a few water bottles that were donated to our school last year in the multi-purpose room. If your student does not have a water bottle, please contact your student's teacher via email so that we can provide one to them, if still available.

Thank you for your help with this.

Every Student Needs Earbuds/Headphones

Every student should bring a pair of headphones/earbuds (labeled with their name) to school. We cannot loan students these items for hygienic reasons. We want to avoid sharing lice/germs at all costs so that requires each student to have their own pair.

Thank you for your help with this.

Media Center

We are so happy to see students using the media center again! We continue to have media center orientation with Lower and Upper El classes. Once your (1st-8th grade) student has orientation with their class, they may start coming to the media center with their teacher's permission to check out books.

PreK-K- Can check out ONE book for up to two weeks.

1st-8th Grade- Can check out TWO books for up to two weeks.

We met with our Pre-K friends on Friday, August 27th, and they were allowed to check out one book! Parents, please read the book with your student and send it back to school so that they can check out a new book the next time they return to the media center (September 10th).

Our kindergarten friends will be able to check out their first book on Friday, September 3rd.

Parents/guardians, please help us establish a routine with your students on being RESPONSIBLE with their media center books. They should always take good care of them (no food or drink when reading, no writing on the pages, etc.) and they should remember to return the books in a timely manner.

Happy reading!

Sincerely,

Ms. Lisa and Ms. Laura

As we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is striving to improve safety and reduce risk wherever possible. One safety measure is minimizing cash and check payments at our schools.

We use SchoolCash Online to provide an online payment option for tech fees and other school items and fees. If you haven’t already created a free account, we encourage all parents to register now, so you’ll be ready to make online payments from home: both now and in the future as more school items become available again.

SchoolCash Online is free, safe, simple, secure, and saves time. You will help increase efficiency and security at your school by making payments directly into your school's bank account. This limits the number of people entering the school, reduces risk of lost payments, and allows teachers and office staff to focus on helping students and not counting cash. In addition, you are automatically informed about school activities! Registering takes less than two minutes: visit sccpss.schoolcashonline.com and click Register.
