The HIVE
Mr. Jackson
There is never a reason…
…you cannot learn anything you want to know. There is so much access to limitless amounts of books, Chromebooks, smartphones, internet, etc., that our available knowledge is unmatched. You can learn anything from a new language to programing your own video game if you take the time to grow your mind and sharpen your edge. Reading a book, article, or magazine about something you want to learn introduces new information that grows you. Putting that new information into practice sharpens your edge. No excuses, no easy outs, just opportunities to go to the next level.

Also, instrument choice letters are going to be mailed out over the weekend. This letter will include your child's instrument selection and information about instrument rental night. You will need to sign the letter and indicate if you will be attending instrument rental night or not. (This will let us know how many instruments our instrument rental companies should bring.) Instrument rental night will take place on Tuesday, August 30 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the Middle School gym. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Each student has been actively participating, and giving it their best. We took the Upstander pledge this week, vowing to be responsible and respectful to ALL people at FMS.
This week we will begin work on one of the songs for our first concert.
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
CHOIR CONTRACTS ARE DUE BY SEPTEMBER 2nd!
ARTS ALIVE:
6th grade Arts Alive students have started the year off right! We jumped right in with a rhythm game called Jump In/Jump Out. We have been reviewing music notation with an emphasis on rhythm and beat, learning singing techniques, and using Boomwhackers to practice performing rhythms. Students have also received information about our first project. They will choose a musical artist or group that they like, and write a music review.
This week, we will be reading music reviews, and determining what types of information are usually included in a published music review. Students will also start listening to their selected music in class, and completing evaluation sheets to help guide their writing process. We will continue singing, and rhythm work. Our rhythm focus for this week will be a continuation of our Boomwhacker course, as well as adding an unconventional percussion instrument: CUPS!
Foreign Cultures
Foreign Cultures classes began the school year by discussing what culture IS. We worked together to create classroom definitions of culture. Our definitions will be guiding ideas as we explore a variety of cultures from around the world. We have discussed the culture of FMS, created visual representations of our personal cultures, and debated the importance of intercultural dialogue. Posters created as part of the "Culture of Me" project are being displayed in the music hallway.
This week we will begin our first geographically focused study of culture: Latin America. We are going to spend some time discussing the country of Brazil, it's most prevalent cultural groups, and relating them back to our own lives. Together we will explore Brazil. Students will subsequently choose a cultural group from Latin America to research. They will then have the opportunity to "show what they know" by teaching our class!
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR FOREIGN CULTURES CLASSES! I would love to welcome guests who would like to speak to our classes about their cultural perspectives and experiences. I am especially looking for people who are from, or have spent time in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Please contact me if you are interested in sharing with our class!
Careers
Career Exploration class has been discussing networking, and the differences between jobs, occupations, and careers. Students have been assigned to interview family or community members about their employment. These interviews should be completed and submitted this week. We have also completed a couple of interest assessments to help guide our exploration of careers.
Call for volunteers! As part of our Careers class, I am looking for guests to come speak to the class. If you are interested in coming to talk to us about your job, please let me know. We would LOVE to have you. My intention is to spotlight the 4-5 areas of career interest that our class chooses. We can certainly benefit from learning from YOU!

Welcome back students! We hope your school year is off to a great start.
The State of Missouri recently passed new legislation in regards to bullying. We wanted to share some information with students and parents about bullying vs. rude vs. mean behaviors.
There are three key elements that define bullying: an intent to harm, repeated acts or threats of aggressive behavior, and a power imbalance. Kids who bully purposely say or do something to hurt someone else repeatedly (consecutive days) with no remorse. Bullies cause harm in many different ways: physically, verbally, relationally, or use of the internet. Based on research, Americans have paid more attention to the issue now than ever before. With increased exposure, kids and adults often get these terms confused. “It’s important to know the difference between rude, mean, and bullying so teachers, parents, students, and administrators know what to pay attention to and when to intervene. As we have heard too often in the news, a child’s future may depend on a non-jaded adult’s ability to distinguish between rudeness at the bus stop and life-altering bullying”. (Whitson, 2012).

We want all students at FMS to feel that they have a safe learning environment here at FMS. We take all reports seriously and investigate when these situations are brought to our attention. We also have a Guidance Office referral form that students can fill out if they need to see their guidance counselor. Teachers also have a form that they can fill out if they feel students need to be seen by a guidance counselor.
The Guidance Office is here to help students and parents. Here are a few ways you can reach out to us:
