Coronavirus: Important Update
Minocqua J1 School District
Schools CLOSED through April 5th, 2020- Free meals available to all students
On March 13, 2020 Gov. Tony Evers ordered the closure of all K-12 Wisconsin schools. Due to our spring break falling earlier than most schools and having so many families who had traveled to various locations, we made the decision to begin our school closure on March 16. This school closure will affect almost 855,000 students in more than 400 districts across the state. Wisconsin is just one on the growing list of states closing their public and private schools.
From Gov. Tony Evers, "Closing our schools is not a decision I made lightly, but keeping our kids, our educators, our families, and our communities safe is a top priority as we continue our work to respond to and prevent further spread of COVID-19 in Wisconsin. Kids and families across Wisconsin often depend on our schools to access food and care. We are going to continue working to do everything we can to ensure kids and families have the resources and support they need while schools are closed."
Minocqua J1 School District will be closed from March 16- April 5, 2020. All after school activities and athletics, including practices, will also be canceled during this time. All areas of the building will be closed to the public. Please call our office if your child has something that you absolutely need out of the building and we will do our best to work out a way to get those items to you.
School Meals
Any students in our district, as well as siblings living in the household, are eligible to receive daily breakfast and lunch free of charge, upon request, during the COVID-19 related school closure. Please see the memo below for more details.
Coursework
As our state, local and federal governments work to determine what the next steps will be, we await guidance and work toward figuring out what the best learning options for our students will be. Thank you for your patience and we anticipate more information will be coming to you from our district in the near future.
Home WiFi options
Some internet carriers are offering free and/or low cost options that your family may be able to use. Please contact companies directly to inquire about services available in your specific area.

When School Resumes
The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. When school resumes, please watch for the following symptoms. Keep students home from school and contact their physician to ask to be tested for Coronavirus if they have these symptoms:
*Fever
*Shortness of breath
*Cough
Please contact the MJ1 main office absence line at (715)356-5206 option 1 to report student absences and symptoms. Learn more about the symptoms and treatment of Coronavirus at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website. Those at highest risk for Coronavirus complications are older adults and individuals with compromised immune systems or heart. lung and kidney disease. It can take 2-14 days for a person to develop symptoms after initial exposure to the virus; the average is about 5 days.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation with our school staff and Oneida County Health Department, as well as review updates from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Department of Public Instruction and the CDC.
Most importantly, stay healthy, stay safe, enjoy some quality family time and we can't wait to see you all in a few weeks!
Facts about Coronavirus
HOW TO KEEP OURSELVES HEALTHY
- Wash your own hands frequently with soap and water and make sure your children wash hands whenever they come in from outside the home (see the link above for proper handwashing technique)
- Help your children practice not touching their faces (people touch their faces approximately 23 times an hour; keeping our hands away from our faces is crucial for staying healthy)
- Teach your children to cough and sneeze into the crooks of their elbows.
- Parents: avoid eating from from your children's plates and avoid sharing water bottles
- Avoid being near sick people
- Disinfect surfaces and devices in your home; dispose of all tissues.
Do NOT send your child to school sick. Follow the school guidelines on when to keep your children home. This keeps us all safer.

Obtaining Free Meals during school closure
Memorandum: Free Meals provided to all students during COVID-19 school closure
To: Families of the Minocqua J1 School District
From: Minocqua J1 Administration
Date: 3/17/2020
Beginning on Thursday, March 19, 2020 the Minocqua J1 School District and A’viands Food Service will partner to provide Breakfast and Lunch to district families by request. These meals will be provided at no cost to any family, regardless of your student(s) meal payment status during the regular school year. In other words, even if you normally pay full price you are eligible to receive free meals during this period of school closure mandated as a result of COVID-19. Children in the home under the age of 18 but not attending Minocqua J1 are also eligible to receive these meals.
As you well know, this is a rapidly changing situation and elements of this food distribution plan will change accordingly if need be.
Our current plan is to take requests from families who would like to receive daily meals and deliver those meals to regional sites where they can be picked up and taken home. The 3 sites will be located at Minocqua J1 School, Hwy 70 West Baseball Complex pavilion and the Lake Tomahawk Raymond F. Sloan Community Center. Only the amount of meals requested will be prepared, so please plan to pre-order meals 1 day in advance. At this time we plan to have distribution areas set up outdoors to avoid unnecessary entrance to any buildings.
In order to prepare for Thursday’s meal distribution we will need to receive your meal request by 9:00 am on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Staff will be onsite distributing meals at each location from 11:00 am- 12:30 pm.
Requests should be sent to: mealorder@mhlt.org. Do not call and leave messages in our office requesting meals as we do not have remote access to process these requests. Emailing the above address by 9:00 am on the day prior to meal delivery will be the only way to request a meal.
Your email should include:
*Name of person picking up the meals
*Amount of meals requested
*Pick-up location (Minocqua J1, Hwy 70 W Baseball Complex pavilion, or Lake Tom Community Center)
*Any food allergies
We will reply to email orders to confirm that they have been received. Please make sure to arrive at pick up locations between 11:00 and 12:30.
