UBMS Weekly Update
December 22, 2016
UB Special Award
UB Special awards are given to one student each week. Staff recognize a special student who has demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership, courage, perseverance, ambition, friendship, and/or achievement.
This week's "UB Special" Award goes to KYRA COOPER!
Kyra is a freshmen at Fondy High who started in our program at the beginning of this school year. She has jumped in with both feet and a great big smile! Kyra is taking advantage of many of the UBMS opportunities presented to her to include two college visits already in which she's become quite fond of the college cafeterias.
Kyra is an EXCELLENT communicator and responds to emails in a timely fashion that we appreciate immensely. Her attendance at Study Tables has been perfect and her reflection papers are always on time.
Her accidental destruction of Tracy's gingerbread house at the holiday social will be overlooked because she also happened to be the only student who stayed and helped clean up the tables! Kyra shows signs of a good leader and is certainly a valued student in our program. We are excited about her dedication and think she is pretty special. Please congratulate Kyra on earning this week's virtual "UB Special" Award!

Arianna is a freshmen at Fondy High and was just accepted into our program this week. She is eager to be challenged, learn new things, and have fun. Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Arianna to the UBMS family!
December Reflection Papers due MONDAY, JANUARY 9TH
What should you write about? Please consider the unwrapped gifts you receive over the holidays. Things like... the time spent with family, the new recipe you tried out with grandma, the conversation with your uncle, the look on the faces of the people you sang to, or the hug from your sibling!
Please then consider the unwrapped gifts you have to offer to yourself and to others. Can you eat better? Exercise more? Manage your time better? Study more? Shovel the neighbors sidewalk? Clean your room?!
Remember, these are reflection papers. Please find some quiet time to think about these things and understand the gifts in yourself and those you receive from others.
Happy Holidays?!?
Are you someone who gets irritated when you are greeted with "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"?
Would you like to know why some people chose this saying?
Do you know that no other month out of the year has as many multicultural events, holidays and celebrations than December does? Among those this year are:
- Saint Nicholas Day (Christian)
- Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexican)
- St. Lucia Day (Swedish)
- Hanukkah (Jewish)
- Christmas Day (Christian)
- Three Kings Day/Epiphany (Christian)
- Boxing Day (Australian, Canadian, English, Irish)
- Kwanzaa (African American)
- Omisoka (Japanese)
- Yule (Pagan)
- Saturnalia (Pagan)
On occasion, the season of Ramadan (Islam) falls in December too. Not to mention we had Thanksgiving a week before the month started and are looking at celebrating a New Year!
So to honor all people this season, please consider this lesson. Start a new tradition filled with love and understanding and not be offended when you are greeted with a sincere, all-embracing wish for your holiday. We live in a world in which not everyone has Christian traditions. Many traditions celebrate with gifts, lights, songs, trees, candles and peace and goodwill that are not exclusive to Christmas. They all celebrate with family, friends, food, and joy in their hearts.
Happy Holidays!

Weekly Tip for Parents!
Did you know that a little stress helps you stay alert and focused? Obviously, too much stress can keep you from doing and feeling your best.
When you are feeling stressed, try one of these relaxation techniques:
- Take a deep breath, and then slowly release it. Do this until you feel your body relax.
- Starting at the top of your head, flex, and then relax each part of your body.
- Think of a place where you feel very relaxed and calm. Close your eyes and visualize being in that place.
