Principal Lewis' Sunday Update for the week of 9/5/21

Sunday Call for week of September 7th, 2021

Good evening Sierra Madre Families, this is Mrs. Lewis, your principal. I can hardly believe that we have been in school for 17 days already! In that short amount of time, your kiddos have learned the school rules, navigated through hallways and the outside areas, found ways to be social at lunch and recess with their peers, and continue to smile when they arrive and leave! Thank you for your support!

Here are the announcements for this week:

Monday, September 6th there is no school to honor Labor Day!

Tuesday, September 7th students will return to school. The school tour on the master calendar has been cancelled for September however I will be hosting a virtual Coffee with the principal at 9:30am instead. Please join using this link. I will be explaining contact tracing procedures, quarantine rules, short-term independent study agreements, COVID testing at SME, and answering questions.

COVID Testing at SME

COVID Testing at SME

How and Where PUSD Students and Employees Can Get Tested

  • PUSD offers COVID-19 PCR oral or nasal swab tests on campuses and at the District’s Primary Clinic, 8 a.m. - 3:30 pm. By appointment, please call (626) 396-3600, ext 88180

  • On PUSD campuses(SME) weekly testing, on Thursdays starting in September, is available for ALL students and staff.

  • Register for testing on the Color system here: https://home.color.com/covid/sign-up/start?partner=cdph094.

We had 33% of our kiddos test on our first school Thursday testing date at SME.

We had 3 nurses rotate to all of the classrooms and have students come outside of their classroom to the hallway to do a nasal or oral swab. All Kinder or 1st graders were given the oral swab, unless they asked for the nasal swab. All 2-5th were encouraged to do the nasal but were offered the oral swab upon request or resistance to the nasal swab. The nurses informed us that there is a higher rate of inconclusive results with the oral swab and therefore recommend the nasal swab.

This is what the nasal swab is like...imagine taking a Q-tip and twisting just the white fury tip inside the edge of your nostril for three turns, and then switching to the other nostril and doing it again.

Testing is EASY and will help us keep each other healthy and well! We all want to stay in-person this school year and this is one way we can ALL contribute!

What do I do with my COVID test results?

If you have been asked to get a COVID-19 PCR Lab test by your doctor or due to exposure at school, please email a screenshot of the result to our school nurse Jhona Rupp at rupp.jhona@pusd.us indicating SME in the subject line.

If you tested at school on our Thursday testing day, you only need to scan a screenshot of the results to the school nurse if your test came back "positive".

What do I do when I return to school after being on quarantine?

All students that have been on quarantine need to check in with the school nurse first, before going to class, to get screened. The screening will be verbal questions about how they are feeling as well as a temperature check. Students will be given a clearance to return to class pass to hand to their teacher, indicating screening passed.

Do we answer the screening questions in the morning differently, after quarantine or weekly school tests?

All students that have gotten the school-based testing on Thursdays have not been asked to test through their doctor and therefore can say "no" to waiting on COVID test results.

Any student that is returning from a quarantine may answer "no" to if they have been asked to quarantine, as long as they are returning on the indicated date and with no symptoms.

Why am I not getting notified about exposure at school?

Here is what we are doing at school(contact tracing) when we find out their is a COVID positive person at SME.

  1. find out if that person is on campus(if yes, student is isolated and parent is contacted to pick up)
  2. determine who is/has been in close contact(close contact is considered to be anyone that has been within 6 ft of the positive person for 15 minutes or more within a 24 hour time period)
  3. gather students that are considered close contacts(call parents to pick up and explain 10 day quarantine)
  4. create short-term independent study agreement(work for students to do while they are home during the 10-day quarantine)

*If information is learned over the weekend, all of this contacting is sent out digitally through email to parents

**If you do not receive any notification this means that we are confident that your child has not been within 6ft for more than 15 min within a 24 hour period of the confirmed positive person.

***Vaccinated adults that are not experiencing symptoms do not need to quarantine.

****Siblings of students that are close-contacts at school, do not need to quarantine(contact of a close contact)

*****All family members that live with a COVID positive person are suggested to isolate and quarantine from school.

Here is what the dashboard numbers mean

The PUSD dashboard is updated on Tuesdays and Fridays weekly. You will notice that column 4 indicated how many positive cases within a particular date range while column 5 indicates how many cumulative cases we have had this school year. Columns 6-8 refer to staff member cases.
