From the Desk of Dr. Rodriguez
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life (especially a school administrator's!), we sometimes forget to take a step back and look at the wonderful world around us. Mr. Cohen, Ms. Johnson, and I did just that earlier this week as we chatted about the amazing students we have here at Riviera. Each day that passes just affirms what I felt the first day I met our students as assistant principal in August of 2009 -- that our students are some of the most loving, warm, accepting, welcoming, understanding, compassionate, humble, and selfless students I have ever come across. We often talk about the outstanding, rigorous academic program we have here, but equally important is how we develop our students emotionally and socially. We never miss an opportunity to recognize and thank students when we see they've done something to help another child; when we see them invite the new student to sit at their lunch table; when they lend a pencil to their friend who left her supplies at home; or when they help a student carry his bookbag to class because he broke his arm. Our students do these things not for the praise they receive from us, the adults, but because they know it's the right thing to to do, and they understand that it is through caring for each other that Riviera will continue to be the second home they have come to know and love. So this Thanksgiving, I am eternally grateful for what each student at Riviera has taught me over these 13 years. While my job may be to teach them to be stellar students, they have taught me to be a better human being. I think I got the better end of the deal :)
Our next edition of Friday at 4:00 will be in two weeks. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your family and friends, and remember that we at Riviera are thankful for each of our students, for our faculty and staff members, and for you!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rodriguez

"Current" Events
It was all about electrical circuits this week in the Media Center. Ms. Bello, our outstanding Media Specialist, gave our first grade students the opportunity to make musical art using electrical circuits; second graders made guitars out of the same materials! Second graders were even the stars of their own rock band as Ms. Bello green screened a stage behind them while they performed on their electric guitars. Thank you, Ms. Bello, for an outrageous experience!
