Brought to you by the SERESC STEM Center for Innovation and Excellence
Who Should Attend:
Middle and high school science teachers, English teachers, librarians and media specialists.
About the Presenter
Judith Sumner (B.A. Vassar College; M.S., Ph.D., University of Massachusetts, Amherst) developed a comprehensive program in science writing and literacy at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She is a biologist, science writer, and teacher, with particular interest in original student research in STEM topics. Judith enjoys working with middle and high school teachers who want to implement engaging science writing prompts into their classroom practice. She is certified by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a classroom teacher, supervisor/director, and principal.
About the Workshop:
Science classes present excellent opportunities for nonfiction writing, including alternatives to traditional lab reports and controversial science topics. Participants will learn how to implement a wide range of science writing opportunities in their classes using informational, narrative, and argumentative styles.
The claims-evidence-reasoning model in discussing lab results, essay topics, and scientific misconceptions will be demonstrated.
The workshop will emphasize assignments and strategies that are ready to implement immediately in science classes and labs—from article summaries and laboratory abstracts to academic language and short answer templates. The comprehensive packet of materials will include handouts and other materials that are ready for classroom use.
Outcomes:
As a result of attending, it is anticipated that the Participant will:
- Describe skills essential to designing, modeling, and grading writing prompts and assignments in science classes and labs
- Explore alternatives to traditional lab reports that fulfill Common Core and NGSS expectations
- Demonstrate implementation of several strategies for argumentative writing in science classes and labs.
- Develop a wide variety of science writing strategies that can be implemented immediately in the classroom writing process.
