Pick-ups in Kindergarten Wing (Week of April 29-May 3 ONLY)

Please note that we will need to move our pick-ups at dismissal to the Kindergarten wing, due to a gymnastics unit taking place in the Gym during the week of April 29-May 3. Please plan to meet your child at the outside door at the end of the kindergarten wing between 3:05-3:20 pm. Thank you for your flexibility and cooperation.

NYS Math and Science Tests Reminder

The NYS Math (grades 3-5) and Science Tests (grade 4 only) are coming up:

NYS Math Test (Grades 3-5):

Wednesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 2

NYS Science Test (Grade 4):

Performance test - Wednesday, May 22 or Thursday, May 23 (each class tests separately)

Written test - Monday, June 3

From March 2019 NYS Testing Letter from Dr. Joel Adelberg:

Parents often ask how they might best prepare their children for these tests. Since these tests cover a year of curriculum and learning, the best preparation relates to promoting students’ readiness to “show what they know”. This means a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast, and lots of positive reinforcement.

Our district’s expectation is that all students will take these tests, as they provide us with valuable information on student performance and our commitment to align classroom instruction to the standards. We learn quite a bit about our students and our instructional practices from the results we get from these tests. While we recognize that some parents will have their children “refuse” to participate, we strongly recommend against this. If this is your intention, we will need a written statement of “refusal” by a parent, received by the school, at least three days prior to the specific scheduled state assessment you are refusing to have your child take. We will not offer alternative instruction during the testing time, so your child should come to school with books to read and/or homework to complete.

The Placement Process

A green parent input placement form was sent home via backpack mail last week. Developing classes for the 2019-2020 academic year is a challenging task. Appropriate class placement is extremely important to us because we know that balanced, heterogeneously grouped classes create the most optimal learning environment suitable to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of our students. We value input from parents in helping to determine the best possible learning environment for your child.

Your participation is not required, but if you are interested in participating in the placement process, please complete the form and return it to Mrs. Amy Fishkin in the main office by Tuesday, April 30th.

PRES Celebrates Earth Day!

On April 17th, we gathered the students for our monthly C.A.R.E.s assembly to highlight the ways we can "care" for our earth, our environment, and our community. We also focused on the theme of perseverance. Our kindergarten students led the assembly, reading the book, The Carrot Seed, to teach us about perseverance, and taught us important ways we can take care of the Earth. We enjoyed learning the song, The 3 R's by Jack Johnson. The kindergartners also impressed us with their musical talents as they made music with their recycled musical instruments! PRES 5th grader, Jack Yaggi, shared with us the speech he gave at a recent Pound Ridge Town Board meeting persuading the town of Pound Ridge to ban single-use plastic bags. See photos from our April 2019 C.A.R.E.s assembly.

Throughout the month of April 2019, we celebrated Earth Day in many ways:

  • Morning Announcements: During the month of April, we shared facts and tips each day about ways we can take care of the Earth.

  • Earth Day Informational Sessions: Our Greening Committee spoke briefly with each grade level on Monday, April 15th to educate our students about the 4 R’s – Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and how we can help eliminate plastic waste in our environment.

  • The PRES CAREs bulletin board, designed by our Greening Committee, focused on Earth Day, perseverance, and ways we can reduce our single-use plastics.

  • PTA led two special projects to support the environment, recycling used markers and sneakers through the Turn Markers into Energy and GotSneakers? programs.

  • Students were invited to take a “Plastic Pledge” to inspire behavior change to reduce plastic waste. See the Plastic Pledge coming home in backpack mail.

  • We collected and counted plastic water bottles each week, and noticed that we were able to reduce the number of plastic bottles we throw away as a school community.

  • Grades 3 & 4 will be planting trees in Carolin’s Grove.

The Courtyard Project - Thank you Pound Ridge Car Show!

Thanks to a VERY GENEROUS donation from the Pound Ridge Car Show, the interior courtyard at PRES will be renovated over April Break. When the students and staff return, a beautiful outdoor learning space will be in its final stages. This new "outdoor classroom" will be a quiet space for students to read, learn and study together in our beautiful, natural surroundings. Thank you to the PTA for working closely with the Pound Ridge Car Show and BCSD buildings & grounds department to make this project come to life! You can see some "before" pictures of the courtyard below.

From Sansan and Hide Harashima:

Our Story

When Lucas was diagnosed with DIPG, something great happened in our community. People who have lived in Pound Ridge all their lives said that they had never seen the community come together in such a positive way, not only to help a little boy and his family, but also to feel like true neighbors in the spirit of giving and compassion. Lucas passed away on March 21, 2018, just 18 months after diagnosis. In his honor, we will work tirelessly to find a cure for DIPG.

The Vision: Kids Helping Kids

Our vision for the Love4Lucas Fest is to bring the community together to support two great local causes:

1)Pound Ridge Elementary School PTA

2)Newly formed Love4Lucas Foundation to raise awareness and research for DIPG

A Day of Fun, Food, Festivities, and Fundraising

The day will be filled with games, activities, food from Scotts Corner Market & food trucks, music and more! It's a time to come together to play, laugh, and enjoy time together as a community.
