Lady Trojans Game Moved to Wallace

The Varisty Girls' game scheduled for January 19, 2015 has been moved to Wallace State. Sparkman will play Spain Park at 12:00pm, and Hazel Green will play Austin at 1:30pm. There will be $5 admission charge for spectators. Come support our #3 Lady Trojans!

NAECU Scholarships

North Alabama Educators Credit Union is now accepting applications for a $1,500 Scholarship and a $750 Scholarship to be awarded in the spring of 2015. The student may choose any accredited college/university of their choice to apply. If you are a 2015 graduating high school senior and a NAECU member you may enter to win a scholarship. *All students of public and private schools in Madison, Morgan or Limestone Counties are eligible to become a member of North Alabama Educators Credit Union. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2015. Attached is an application form with all the details on how to apply. Application forms are available at

Motlow Scholarships

Completing a scholarship application at Motlow State Community College will enable their Scholarship Committee to consider you for Motlow College scholarships for which you are eligible. To review a current listing of scholarships and acess the online application, go to

March 15th is the deadline for scholarship consideration. The final number of awards will be based on available funding, and awards are not guaranteed merely based on meeting scholarship requirements.


  • General Criteria by Category: If you are a high school senior or have never previously attended college, you must:
  • Have an admissions application on file in Admissions and Records
  • Have paid the admissions application fee, or have the application fee waived
  • Have a minimum 6-semester high school transcript including your cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) through your junior year with ACT scores on file in Admissions and Records.

Current Announcements

Learning Community Fundraiser - The Learning Community Fundraiser ends Friday, January 16. Shirts are long-sleeve Comfort Color. HG is on Front chest pocket, and the state logo on the back. Shirts are $25 and proceeds benefit community outings for the students of the HGHS Learning Community. Here is the link to order: . Second Semester Fees - The fee deadline for second semester is February 20. After that, students will be added to the debtor's list. Visit the school website for a list of fees. Fees may be paid at or to Mrs. Weir.

Trojan Miss - Join us for the annual Trojan Miss Pageant on February 13th and 14th! 9th-12th grade pageant will be held February 13th at 7:00pm. Little and Junior Trojan Miss pageant will be held Saturday, February 14th at 10:00. Entry fee is $40. For pageant information, registration and online payment, visit the Trojan Miss website.

Youth Speed and Agility School -
All male athletes who are currently in 4th-7th grade are invited to attend the 2nd Annual Hazel Green Speed and Agility School. Join the football coaches every Tuesday and Thursday night from 5:30-6:30pm in the football complex to work on quickness, proper form, overall athleticism and work ethic. The school runs from January 7th-March 20th, and the cost is FREE!

Music Man Auditions -
Audition sign ups are this week after school in Ms. Abercrombie’s classroom, N120. Auditions are open to the entire student body, but you must meet with Ms. Abercrombie this week and sign up for an audition time. We are also scheduling interviews for tech positions. Auditions will take place January 14th and 15th.

Yearbooks are on sale NOW and may be purchased at The last day to order yearbooks is January 15 and they will arrive before the end of school. Don’t be left out on Yearbook day in the spring!

Meridianville Rec Volleyball - Meridianville Athletic Association is offering volleyball this season for boys and girls ages 7-16. Registration runs through January 27th. They are also hosting a players and coaches clinic conducted by Coach Hughes, Head Volleyball Coach at HGHS. For more information, visit

Pizza Hut in Meridianville has designated the first Tuesday of every month as Meridianville Eagles Boys Basketball Night

Yearbook Ads - Parents it is time to place your order for a senior ad in the 2015 yearbook to honor your senior. All ads are full color. You may submit your own design or one of our talented staff members will create one for you. Pricing: 1/8= $75, 1/4=$95, 1/2=$130, Full page= $180, 2 page spread= $275. No WORD documents please. Our system will support Studio Works and Photo Shop if changes need to be made. Contact Mrs. Brady at if you would like to reserve a spot today.


Prom money is due to Mrs. Bell or Mrs. Dean. The price is $60 a ticket, but will go up after January 30th.

Girls Dress Code:

1. Excessive cleavage is not allowed.

2. Dress may be backless as long as it is not cut below the waist.

3. Navel may not be exposed.

4. No pinning will be allowed as an alteration for a dress if, without the pinning, the dress does not meet dress code.

5. Dress should not be excessively short or pulled up when dancing.

Boys Dress Code:

1. Suits or tuxedos should be worn.

3. Shirts must be buttoned up to the second button from the collar.

4. Pants should fit properly on the hip and not sag below the waistline.

Delta Sigma Theta Honors Convocation - The Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is accepting applications for its 36th Annual High School Honors Convocation. Each year, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recognizes the accomplishments of local high school students who have achieved honor roll status during the Fall Semester. All students in grades 9-12 who have earned an A and/or B average for each subject during the first semester is eligible to participate. For more information, please contact Mr. William Heard ( in the Guidance Office for a complete application packet. The deadline to submit applications is January 26th, 2015.

Violet Richardson Award - Soroptimist International is a global volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Each year the Huntsville club solicits young women to apply for the Violet Richardson Award for young women whose leadership and volunteer activities make the community and world a better place. The club-level award is $500.00 and the award recipient becomes eligible for region‐level awards. The deadline is January 14. Email Becky Hollis at for an application.

Literary Arts Awards Competition -
Alll interested students in Grades 9-12 are invited to submit their entries to the High School Literary Arts Awards (HSLAA) through January 12, 2015. Participating students may be eligible for awards and scholarships in the categories of poetry, short fiction, drama, creative nonfiction, portfolios, and literary magazines. Cash awards are available to high school seniors through the senior portfolio competition. Complete guidelines and entry forms are available on the Alabama Writers’ Forum Web site at

National School Counseling Week Poster & Essay Contest - All entries should reflect the designated theme:

· Grades K-11: What are School Counselors and how do they help students? How have you been helped?

· Grade 12: How has a School Counselor helped guide you toward your future?

The state-level 1st place winner for 12th grade will receive a $1000 scholarship for post-secondary endeavors, sponsored by Alabama College and Career Guide ( Enrollment in a post-secondary institution at the time of scholarship award is required. National Society of Black Engineers High School Essay Contest - The paper must address the topic of cyber security. With cyber threats in a state of rapid and continuous evolution, keeping pace in cyber security strategy and operation has become a major challenge. What is the significance or impact of cyber security in our daily lives? Authors of the top two essays will receive a monetary award in the amount of $150. Deadline is January 12, 2015. Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week - Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and display a history of athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community/civic involvement. All weekly winners are invited to a banquet held in their honor in May, and two students are selected as Athletes of the Year. The two Athletes of the Year each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Trojan Daily Tips - All the newest information will be at the top, followed by our Athletic Schedules, Current Announcements, Senior Information and Permananent Announcements. Information from previous newsletters remains posted in Current Announcements until it expires. I welcome parents to send scores, pictures and updates from any Hazel Green sports or activities. We can't brag about it if we don't know about it. Scholarship and college visit information will only be posted once, and then it can be found on separate webpages for General Scholarships, College and University Scholarships, and School Visits and Special Programs.

Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.

Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend
- Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.

1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.

2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.

3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.

Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors during school. All students are strongly encouraged to utilize this service provided to us. For more information, visit

First Priority/FCS
meets every Tuesday morning at 8:00 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.

Parenting Assistance Line:
PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.

Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.

Reward Cards:
Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit:
Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
