The character trait this week is Gratitude!

Gratitude is the quality of feeling and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world, and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for

kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Parent-child conversations outside of school are a significant way to instill the character strengths vocabulary and ownership in students. Parent virtue: Transcendence. These strengths allow people to rise above their troubles and find meaning in the larger universe. Strengths of transcendence are appreciation of beauty and excellence, connection/purpose, gratitude, hope/optimism, and humor.

This is the gratitude character card.

Students of the Month

For the Month of October there were two students of the month; Adyson Bergeron and Connor Hazelton.

Adyson is a 7th grade student at JW Leary who was nominated because she demonstrated teamwork, open-mindedness, integrity by taking what seemed like a bad situation and turning it into an opportunity for growth. She used open-mindedness and communication, the willingness to view a situation from a different perspective...and ended up helping to solve a problem. Adyson and the "B Team" came up with not only a plan/solution that might just prove to be helpful (not only for herself but for fellow classmates for years to come) Adyson used her creativity to create a tool/aid that can be used during the implementation process of the plan. Way to turn a trial into a triumph Adyson!!!

Connor is an 8th grade student at JW Leary who was nominated because daily he demonstrates teamwork, open-mindedness, and integrity through his friendly nature and ability to help other children and staff. He greets staff outside with a "good morning" everyday. I have also witnessed his kindness in the halls with his peers. Kind, compassionate, eager to learn and just as eager to help out someone in need. Always respectful saying good morning, good evening, thanks and you're welcome. He is a true role model that has the work ethic and discipline of a responsible adult.

Thank You Veterans

To demonstrate our appreciation and thanks to Veterans children signed posters and wrote letters of thanks that were brought to organizations within our community.

Children also had conversations with and asked amazing questions to the two Veteran's that we have on staff Mrs. Hayes and Miss. Travis.

Thank you all for providing our children the opportunity to learn about your experiences as they begin to plan for their lives.

Things happening in classes.

Below are several photos taken in Mrs. Goodrich's 7th grade science classes. This week the classes set up worm compost bottles.

The white Styrofoam bin contains our red wiggler worms (donated by Kristin Colarusso Martin- thank you!!), each student got 2 worms as well as some other soil microbes to help do the decomposing in their bottles.

Many named their worms and we can see them doing their work through the clear bottles :D

Reminder that winter registration is open but will be closing soon. If your student is interested in trying out for a Winter sport please register them as soon as possible.
