Family Cougar Connect
Newsletter #19 June 5, 2023
Cougar Families,
The end of the year snuck up on us! We have had quite an eventful start to June with some magical events that have taken place, like our Walk-A-Thon and our spring musicals. Below are a few more important dates to keep in mind as we wrap up this school year.
It has been such a joy to see our cougars grow throughout this year. Mrs. Hook and I feel proud to be the building leaders of such incredible students. Thank you for all that you have done this year for our community, we value you.
As a community, we celebrate diversity and inclusivity. Throughout the year we celebrate and teach the various cultural celebration aligned with the Bellevue School District cultural calendar. This has helped us stay informed with the many celebrations people in our community are engaging in. As we provide opportunities for new learning and new perspectives to support growth, empathy, and compassion for all. This year, we’ve celebrated various cultures and heritages, holidays, unity day, and now, in June, we recognize the diverse LGBTQIA+ community within Bellevue and beyond. For Pride Month, we focus on celebrating the uniqueness of all – showing pride for being our unique selves and celebrating unity as a community.

Hello families! Please make sure to return all BSD technology tools to Clyde Hill by Thursday June 15th! This includes your child’s device, any extra charges, and stylus’ you have at home. Please keep in mind that if your child’s device has extreme damage that is ruled to be intentional you may have fines you have to pay. Accidental damage in elementary school is not assigned a fine. If you have questions/concerns or would like to discuss summer tech access, please reach out to me or our building ITCL Marissa Sampsel.
Kinder Registration
If you or someone you know has an incoming kindergartener, please enroll them as soon as possible. All enrollment information, including forms and list of required documents, can be found by visiting https://bsd405.org/schools/enrollment/
Thank you!
Scooters and Bikes @ School
If your child rides a bike or scooter to school, remind them to walk their bikes/scooters when on campus. And please make sure they park at the bike racks. Many students have been storing their bikes and scooters in the foyer; for security and safety they need to be parked at the bike racks. Thank you for understanding.
Earthquake Drill Today
Today we conducted an earthquake drill and practiced what we would do if we were at school in the event of an earthquake. Students practiced Drop, Cover, and Hold On and evacuating the building.
Please talk to your child about our drill today. An important next step might be planning a drill in your own home and checking to make sure you are prepared in the event of an earthquake or other natural disaster.
For more information on earthquakes and general preparedness, you might want to visit the Washington Emergency Management Division (https://mil.wa.gov/personal) or Great Washington ShakeOut (https://www.shakeout.org/washington/index.html) websites.
Focus on the Virtue of Joyfulness
Our Virtue for the month is joyfulness. Joyfulness is an inner feeling of peace and happiness. Enjoying the richness of life, finding humor in the midst of hard times. Life and school can sometimes be hard, we might feel down about how things might be going. When we find joy, we are able to smile and find a sense of balance and peace for ourselves. We practice joyfulness by smiling, laughing at small things, have a positive outlook, and recognizing that hard days will pass. We can practice joy, but looking at things that make us happy. Like dancing, taking a walk, listening to music, or simply being with the people we love. We can find joy in many ways. You just need to figure out what bring you peace, happiness and balance.
Reflection questions at home:
- What brings you joy?
- What does joy feel like to you?
- Why is joy important?
- What does joy look like for you at home? in your larger community? at school? work?
Ensuring School Safety
School safety is a priority for us! We want to ensure our cougars are safe during arrival and dismissal. Please be sure that you are obeying traffic laws with speed limits in our school zone, being mindful of our school staff who is helping during this time, and students crossing the streets/crosswalks.
Student supervision does not begin till 7:45, please refrain from leaving your child at school earlier than this time.
Please be sure to refrain from using your cellphones will driving and attend to the safety of all members in our community.
Remember to use the parking spot available when parking your vehicle. Never leave your vehicle parked in front of other parked cars or in fire zones.
