How can you help every child fulfill their potential? Develop a Growth Mindset.

Stanford University Psychology Professor, Carol Dweck Ph.D., after decades of research on achievement and success, introduced the idea of teaching a growth mindset. Dweck states in her book, Mindset, The New Psychology of Success, "our mindset creates our whole mental world. It shapes our goals, our attitude toward work and relationships, and how we raise our children."

“In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” Carol Dweck 2010

Distance Learning Student Spotlight

Don’t miss the opportunity to integrate student video conferences into your social studies/history lessons for January. If anyone has a class who is interested in participating in the Martin Luther King Jr. session, request this video conference through CILC or register your class directly from the MVESC scheduling system.

Follow your Dreams! (Martin Luther King)

This special event takes an up close look at an American hero, Martin Luther King Jr. His background information will be explored along with the heroic actions he endeavored throughout his life. Students will learn the significance of Martin Luther King Day and discuss how this hero has impacted their lives.

Appropriate for grades 3-5

Cost: $85.00 per site /30 student maximum per session (MVESC DL members – FREE with current membership)

Exercise and the Common Core State Standards

January 1st always seems to the be the time people decide to add exercise back into their routine. The whole new years resolution to get healthy! There actually has been a study done about exercise and the Common Core State Standards.

One fifth grade teacher says:

Universal Design for Learning

Need a blueprint for thinking about ways to differentiate for the types of learners in your classroom?

Check out the 3 principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials and assessments that work for everyone. website

Principle 1: Multiple Means of representation – To provide students various ways of acquiring information and knowledge.

Principle 2: Multiple Means of Action and Expression- To provide options for demonstrating what students have learned.

Principle 3: Multiple Means of Engagement: To tap individual learners’ interest, challenge them appropriately and motivate them to learn.
