After School Pick-Up
- When picking up students, please park and then walk to the sidewalk area to escort your child across the parking lot to your car. We ask you to do this to ensure the safety of ALL students, including your child.
- If you are parking in the pick-up line next to the school, please remember that you can NOT park to close to the school bus line. We ask that you use the drain pipes on the building as a gauge, and do not park closer than the second white drain pipe. This allows our busses to still be able to maneuver around parked cars when it is time for them to leave.
When there is rain or snow present, it will be especially important to ensure we have a parking lot that runs smoothly and safely for all!
If you see anything in the Lost & Found that belongs to your child, please contact Mrs. Schultz OR Mrs. Thompson at (402) 527-5946

Tips and Tricks - Step 2 - Teach the Behavior
Select one to three routines where growth is needed. Teaching will focus on the expectations for these chosen routines.
In order to keep your child engaged, use a variety of ways to demonstrate the behavior. BE PATIENT!! It takes time to learn a new procedure.
- Model the behavior in the location where you want to see it (If the behavior should happen in the bathroom, model in the bathroom. If the behavior should happen at the dinner table, model at the dinner table.)
- Give clear and specific directions
- Teach the wanted behavior ONE step at a time
- Show examples AND non-examples of the behavior
- Give positive feedback
Keys to success: If you want a behavior teach it! If you like the behavior, recognize it. Teach the new behavior rather than reacting to the unwanted behavior. Patience is important when teaching a new behavior!

Exciting News from the Nurse's Office!!
The Nebraska Department of Education has awarded Shelby-Rising City School a $3,000 grant for the purpose of supporting a healthy school environment and wellbeing practices through the Nebraska Healthy Schools Program. With the grant money, we are purchasing a Plusoptix vision screener tool. This tool will aid Nurse Denise to better screen students, promote vision health, and improve learning in and out of the classroom.
Eighty (80%) percent of learning in the classroom setting is through vision; so early vision screening and referrals are necessary to promote eye health and classroom success. The tool allows students to simply look at the device for a few seconds and it gives a reading of the student’s visual ability. (No reading/verbalizing of letters or pictures is needed)!
The State of Nebraska’s regulations require a minimum of an annual vision screening be completed for students ages 3-5 years (pre-K), for kindergarten through fourth grade, and for students in seventh and tenth grade. We are so very excited to be receiving this tool to assist in identifying visual problems and help each student succeed in and out of the classroom.

10 Ways to Improve Your Child's Math Skills
- Promote a positive attitude about math. What you say influences how your child thinks!
- Incorporate math into your child's daily life. Have your child count out change or help with recipes that are halved or doubled. Ask them to skip count as you take steps on a walk, or count the cars you meet on the road as you drive.
- Help your child appreciate how math is used in everyday life - for example, in sports - explain the rule for how points are earned (in basketball - each basket is worth two points, so we add two to the score), or when making purchases and paying bills.
- Make math fun. Dominoes, cards, and board games that use counting and paper money improve mental math skills.
- Ask for explanations of math assignments so you know that your child understands the concepts that they are working on.
- Challenge your child to be persistent about solving difficult math problems. Remind them that there are things that are difficult for you too.
- Review your child's homework and discover together how mistakes were made.
- Encourage your child to do EXTRA math problems to build upon math skills.
- Talk to your child's teacher about how you can help with the learning process.
- Praise your child's efforts and math accomplishments.
Remember - Practice in mathematics is the same as for sports - it helps your child master new skills!
