NO SCHOOL NOVEMBER 3!!!
NEWS FROM DR. CHAUSSEE
Starting on Monday, November 2, we are having all first graders enter and exit using the front door, #1. This is done for two main reasons: 1. To relieve the congestion that occurs north of the crosswalk on 155th Street which will only get worse with snow. 2. We feel we can comfortably and safely have more students come in door #1 along with kindergartners.
In the past, all students other than KidsNet students came in door #1, but obviously that was before Covid. We will be letting in one room at a time out of seven so the students won’t be let in until 8:10 and will take about 5-8 minutes to get the seven classes in. I am hoping that more first grade parents will use the parking lot to drop off their children as the first graders have less distance to come in. They will also exit those doors at 3:20.
MAP
MAP Growth Winter, 2019 to Fall, 2020
Due to the pandemic and school closing in the spring we were unable to assess students using MAP in the spring of 2020. For those new to school, MAP is the Measure of Academic Progress which has been administered in Millard for several years and throughout the country for 20 years. It is our way to see how students, classes, and the school makes academic progress. During conferences your child’s teacher shared their MAP results with you. Each student has their own report which keeps track of their progress from kindergarten to eighth grade. The test is normally given three times a year.
The charts below show the growth from last year’s winter scores to this year’s fall scores showing the same group of students. In other words, the red bar above grade one shows the score from fall of this year compared to the same students as kindergarteners in winter, 2019.
Due to nine weeks of students not in school the progress was less than usual. The typical math national growth from kindergarten winter to first grade in fall should be from 146 to 156; Abbott students increased from 158 to 169 as seen in the top graph. We did outperform the norm, but Abbott students usually far outperform the norm.
Parents are also given their children’s scores in national percentiles. These graphs do NOT show national percentiles.
TIMELINESS MATTERS
Parents, please be aware that we let students enter the school between 8:05 and 8:20. Some students are arriving too early and some too late. We don’t provide supervision prior to 8:00. If children are late, then they need to enter through the front door. I often thought that people that are late as children will probably be late for work as adults even if as children it’s not their fault but it’s a learned behavior.
