DONATE LIFE MONTH
We honor all who have given the gift of life, and we focus our efforts on the extreme need for organ and tissue donors. In addition, we encourage residents to choose to be organ donors and share their decision to donate with family members.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
Preventing child abuse and neglect is a community problem. Assistance from the right person and/or agency can provide children and their caregivers the help they need to become healthy, functioning families. Today, we call upon all citizens, community agencies, faith groups, medical facilities, and businesses to increase participation in caring for and offering support to those the most vulnerable.

CARRIE NATION PAYS A VISIT
Carrie Nation – she of saloon-smashing fame as she wielded her trusty hatchet – arrived in Florence in late October, 1902, to give a speech on the evils of “Demon Rum.” She was greeted by a large audience at the Opera House on Tennessee Street for her evening performance. According to the Florence Times on October 31, 1902, she “spoke the truth but her plain language sat heavily on the sensibilities of the audience.” Further, she “trod heavily on the toes of several individuals and, as a result, her departure on Tuesday morning was characterized by a volcanic eruption of words that enlivened the whole community near the Commercial Hotel where the smasher had passed the night.” Specifically, according to the Florence Herald, Mr. J.L. Bell, whom she had roundly condemned, “stepped up and proceeded to turn loose upon her a volley of profane and abusive language such as was probably never before addressed to any creature who wore skirts in the broad Southland.” Mr. Bell was arrested but released on bond, later paying a fine of $10 and Court costs for using abusive and insulting language in the presence of women.” Mrs. Nation sold (what else?) miniature hatchets as souvenirs of her visit. One has to wonder if some of these souvenirs might be stashed away in local attics.
