The mission of the Cedar Rapids Home School Assistance Program is to provide an educational alternative that considers the best interest of the student, benefits home schooling families, meets the educational requirements of the school district, and complies with state law.

CRHSAP Families,
It's a new year and we have another month full of activities lined up for our CRHSAP families! Please read through this newsletter and RSVP by 12/22/17 to the events of your choosing using the links provided.
We hope this year is filled with stories of joyful times with your family and many accounts of academic successes as you continue in your mission of homeschooling your children. We look forward to continuing to assist you in your academic endeavors in the coming year.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
There will be no classes December 25th-January 2nd due to Winter Break.
Regular HSAP Enrichment classes will resume on January 3rd, and the new session of Thursday classes will begin January 11th.
There will be no K-5 Enrichment Classes January 15th and 16th due to district inservice.

Thursday Afternoon Classes - Session 2
Family Math Class
(Dates: Thursdays from 1/11 through 5/3, with the exception of 1/18)
In this class, students grades K-2, together with their parents, will explore the world of mathematics! We will learn strategies, activities, and games that will make mathematics more fun for the whole family. These activities will be used as a vehicle to learn more about important topics in K-2nd grades like place value, addition, subtraction, and telling time.

Drama Class
(Dates: Thursdays from 1/11 through 5/3)
Do people tell you that you are dramatic? How do you express yourself? If you're interested in learning about drama, performance, and working with others, please sign up on the RSVP. This class is now open to students in grades 3-8. Students who attend Thursday Middle school classes will be allowed to stay after middle school to attend this class.

Workplace Learning Connection
Job Internships are available for students in grades 11 & 12!
Interested in an internship in the summer or fall of 2018? Applications due Feb. 2nd!
Students in 11th and 12th grades may apply for 45 and 90-hour internship experiences. Interns can learn new skills, apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, develop employability behaviors that prepare them for the workplace, and gain insight that will help them make more informed career choices. More information and applications are available at www.workplacelearning.org.

YMCA OPEN SWIM
The First and Third Wednesdays
January 3rd and 17th
Time: 1:30-3:00

The YMCA generously opens their pool for CR-HSAP families during their open swim times. This opportunity is free. When families go, please show your membership card or if you are not a member of the Y, please sign in on the CR-HSAP sheet located at the front desk.
Below are the YMCA Rules:
1. A parent needs to accompany their children at this event.
2. Any non-swimmers must wear a floatation device; plan to bring your own.
3. The non-swimmer must have their parent in the water and within an arm’s length reach at all times.
4. Inflatable items are not allowed.
5. Pool toys are allowed, but use may be constrained depending on patron usage of the pool during that Open Swim time.
6. Lifeguards have the authority over all of the posted pool rules and rules that only appear in the YMCA’s handbook.

Homeschool Hatchery February Event
Open Lab days encourage family “hands on time” with Maker Materials received from the Alliant Energy Foundation and other donors. The materials supplied will vary each open lab day. Participants could experience floor robots, coding centers, cardboard and LEGO build stations, the demolition center, green screen/stop motion photography, and virtual reality expeditions.

Eastern Iowa Airport Tour
Do you know what happens from the time you buy an airplane ticket until you get to your destination? Have you wondered what kinds of jobs it takes to get you safely from Cedar Rapids to another part of the country? Join us as we check out the ticket counter, the baggage return, and safety areas. The tour is free of charge. Parking is $3.00 for 31-60 minutes and $1.00 for each additional ½ hour.
Because our space is VERY limited for this tour, we are limiting our RSVP sign up to one parent and CRHSAP students enrolled in grades kindergarten and up. If you are unable to sign up at this time, watch your February newsletter for additional opportunities.

Mt. Vernon Road Hy-Vee Tour
This tour is for all ages, and is free of charge.
Take some time out of your winter day and join Kim Procter, a dietitian at Hy-Vee, who will show us the different areas of the Mt. Vernon store. The areas we will visit will include produce, the bakery, the meat counter, and more.

Iowa Online Parent In-service
This event is for parents of K-12 students. (See directives about student attendance below.) There are TWO sessions, one from 10:00am-Noon, (this session is currently closed) and the other from 1:00-3:00pm.
One of the many benefits of enrolling with CRHSAP is access to Grant Wood AEA’s Online Resources. This gives you access to 25+ high quality, safe, web based resources for use with Pre K - 12th grade.
The two hour in service is a wonderful opportunity to work with the GWAEA online resource expert, Kathleen Goslinga. She will guide us through the websites explaining the content and sharing ideas on ways they can be used to enhance student curriculum.
It is recommended that you bring your own device (laptop, IPad etc). If you do not have a portable device to bring, please indicate that on the RSVP and we will bring one you can use.
Students may attend with their parents. They must stay with their parents at all times and follow along with the presentation or have other work to do.

"Try-it-on" Tuesday
This event is open to HSAP 9th-11th grade students only.
Are you a student interested in a career in health, business/IT or industrial technology?
A CRHSAP staff member will accompany CRHSAP 9th-11th grade students as they join the staff and faculty at Kirkwood’s Linn County Regional Center to explore the opportunities that exist to receive hands-on career experience as well as transferable college credit in these fields! Come discover the training, knowledge and jobs that are available in the pathways you are interested in.

Kirkwood Linn Regional Center Informational Meeting and Tour
This tour is open to high school students with their parents.
Kirkwood’s Linn County Regional Center features innovative programming called Career Academies that are provided through partnerships with several local high schools and area businesses. The unique cooperation gives high school students hands-on career experience and transferrable college credit at NO COST to their families!
Career Academies are a sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical courses that focus on career exploration and hands-on learning that align with industry and local workforce needs. These experiences allow students to experiment with a variety of subjects and learn their true passions before committing to one or two subject areas in college.
High school students and their parents are invited to come learn about how eligible students in the Cedar Rapids Community School District enroll in courses through Kirkwood Community College at the Linn Regional Center. Students earn both high school credit and college credit while enrolled in the Cedar Rapids Home School Assistance Program.

"Dragons Love Tacos" by Adam Rubin- Dragons love all sorts of tacos-except spicy ones! When a boy throws his new dragon friends a spicy salsa taco party , red-hot trouble ensues.
"Interrupting Chicken" by David Ezra Stein- It's bedtime for the little red chicken. Papa is going to read her a story, but the chicken can't help interrupting. Will the chicken ever get to sleep?

Kaleidoscope Series at the Gallagher Bluedorn- "Huck and Tom and the Mighty Mississippi"
"Huck and Tom and the Mighty Mississippi" introduces the audience to the characters, setting, humor and humanity of Mark Twain's most famous novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Tickets for this performance are $1 a piece. Just a reminder that if you sign up for this performance, you are agreeing to purchase tickets whether or not you attend.
