"Success For Every Student"
September 5, 2021
Notes From the Principal
Dear, Mustang Families -
On behalf of the entire staff, l want to thank you for helping us get the school year off to a great start! Our students have done a great job of readjusting to a full day of classes and full classrooms for the first time since March of 2020. This is the closest it’s felt to “normal” since the start of the pandemic; it feels great to be back fully in person!
Here are a few things I want to make sure you are aware of as we begin the second week of school.
ISD 622 Covid Guidelines and Procedures: I want to make sure that everyone has easy access to our current district Covid Guidelines and Procedures. These procedures will help us keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.
No School on Labor Day: In recognition of Labor Day, there will be no school on Monday, September 6th.
Student Devices: We distributed laptops to all students last week. Devices will not be used all day long but will certainly be used at various times every day. Please make it part of your child’s routine to charge their laptop and bring it to school every day.
Walking Field Trip Permission: Due to construction, we don’t have access to outdoor spaces at MMS for Phy. Ed classes. Therefore we need to use alternative outdoor spaces for some of our Physical Education classes. We will be walking to Northwood Park and Hillside Park as weather permits. Both parks are about a block away from school. We are sending walking field trip permission forms home with students this week.
ISD 622 Advisory Committee, You’re Invited!: The District 622 Advisory Committee is composed of parents, teachers, administrators, and community members who participate in a process to review and improve instruction, curriculum, and assessment in District 622. Committee meetings are an opportunity for stakeholders to give input and get updates about ISD 622 happenings. The group meets once per month from 6-8 pm via Zoom. Contact Courtney McCormick cmccormick@isd622.org with questions or to join the group.
Meeting dates this year: September 8, October 13, November 10, December 8, January 12, February 9, March 16, April 13, May 11.
Drop Off and Pick Up: As those of you who drive your kids to school know, our parking lot is not ideal for traffic flow, and the construction of the new school makes it even more difficult. The easiest way to improve our traffic flow is to form a single line and pull forward as far south (toward the new construction) as you can for both drop-off and pick-up.
We are here to help. Please reach out to the school at 651-748-6500 if you have any questions or need help with something.
Thanks,
Eric Mjolsness

WHAT is TOPS? Targeted Opportunities for Personal Success (TOPS) is Maplewood Middle School's after-school program. TOPS classes focus on improving math, reading, writing, organization, motivation, social skills, and much more. The classes engage the students in fun after-school activities that will help them learn, develop important life skills, and build positive relationships with other students and teachers in the school.
WHEN is TOPS? TOPS runs after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4pm. Students will be enrolled in one class per day, and must stay in that class for the duration of the session. Students can participate on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Students who bus to/from school can take our late activities bus at 4pm or be picked up. Session 1 runs from Tuesday, September 21 to Tuesday, December 21. Session 2 runs from Tuesday, January 4 to Tuesday, May 31.
HOW do students sign up for TOPS? Class sign ups will start on September 12 (a link will be sent in next week’s newsletter). Students will also have time in Advisory on September 13.
