Lunch Bunch Book Club
If you like to read, this is the club for you! The Horizon Lunch Bunch is a group of 5th graders who meet in small groups with volunteers during their lunch time (11:20 AM-11:50 PM) to read and discuss books, while eating their lunch. There will be 3 sessions offered. View the links below for more information and sign-up.
Sign-up: Look over the book selections with your child and type your child’s name in an open slot underneath the book your child would like to read. If the book selection is full, please choose another book or session. You may sign your child up for all three sessions if they are interested. We just ask that they are willing to commit to whichever sessions and books they sign up for. The clubs meet during the lunch hour (they eat and talk) so they will not miss recess.
Reading
Poetry and building comprehension are in full force!
We will be having our annual "Coffee House" on Monday, Dec. 21st and Tuesday, Dec. 22nd. Students are examining the theme, making inferences and determining the main idea of many poet's compositions. They will be dressing as hippies and reciting a modern, traditional and one of their personally written poems for this fun-filled event.
As we continually work on building comprehension, we will be making connections to better understand the text. The following connections will help us build a stronger comprehension base: text to self, text to text, text to world and text to media,
Writing
This week students participated in active mapping and creating timelines. The purpose was to demonstrate writing with the lens of geography and writing in chronological order. Students continue to acquire a greater depth of knowledge of their topic with these lessons so when we revise our entire essay next week, the newest version should contain thorough research and few holes in their subtopics.
The Thankfulness Essay Contest was optional for students to enter last week. Two winners were chosen from each category of writing represented (poetry, essay, or thoughtful letter). The winners were: Emma Williams, Kelli Harrigan, Chase Barrow, Addy Nysse, Ava Kiel and Mackenzie Dempsey.
Math
We had a great time in math this week! Using their knowledge of multiplying fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers, students cooked in math class! Take a look at the video below to see some of the highlights. Students will be bringing home their Unit 3 Quiz 1 today in their Math Take Home Folders. Please take a look at these quizzes and sign the sheet in their folders.
Next week students will be learning how to divide whole numbers and unit fractions. Once again, students will not learn the standard algorithm until they understand why it works. This allows students to build a strong numbers sense.
Social Studies
We are also continually doing our Geo Adventures (geography) and CNN current event activities, along with studying exploration. We are making a literature connection stressing the point of view reading strategy and will begin writing a historical, persuasive proposal that fits in with the time period that we are studying.
Science
This week, students investigated the effect that inorganic and organic material has on corn growth. Students planted corn in two different cups. One cup had organic material and the other had inorganic - students hypothesized which corn plant would grow best. In addition, students worked either independently or with a partner to create a page in our class Diary of a Worm book.
Next week students will be learning about fungus all week! Specifically students will be growing mycelium (the main part of fungus) in coffee grounds. After reading and taking notes on fungus students will have a quiz to assess their knowledge.
