Current Studies and Explorations- a message from Mrs. Redmon

I cannot believe the year has flown by. Summer is just approaching in a few weeks. I have really enjoyed enriching your child's learning this school year.

In April, students were given a Mystery Engineering Challenge to build a Pom Pom Launcher. Each child was given materials and asked to create a launcher that was either hand-held or stationary. The challenge was an individual based challenge with ONLY scaffolding from the teacher. It was up to the student to create their own design and execute building their prototype. They were allowed to tweak and make improvements along the way. Even with the specifications, students completed the task with flying colors. I was proud of each design and what they accomplished through the challenge.

In May, students will be learning the physics of roller coasters. Students will discover the science behind roller coaster engineering. The students will then apply those concepts, by recreating the various roller coaster designs through manipulation of common everyday pipe insulation. To further their exploration, students will be asked to sketch other roller coaster designs and test out their designs. Check out your SeeSaw app to see your student in action.

I have truly enjoyed working with your child this year. I am honored to have been a part of their discoveries for their Kindergarten year. I hope they have an amazing summer!

local events:

BREC Highland Observatory:

-Every Friday & Saturday Nights: Evening Sky Viewings (Free/all ages/Fri.: 8:30-10pm/Sat. 7:30-10pm)

There are many opportunities, summer camps, events, going on throughout the summer. Check them out and take the whole family.

Quick Summer Tip: Give your child a notebook that they can journal/sketch/keep recordings of what they have learned or discover this summer. Allow your child to bring it to the zoo or museums you attend. Pack it in their bag for vacation. You will be amazed at their wonder and discoveries they will want to document. Plus, it is a great memory and keepsake for your child to have of their discoveries.
