COMMON SENSE MEDIA
To our parents and caregivers...a note about Common Sense Education’s Digital Citizenship Curriculum
Your child has recently taken part in classroom lessons from Common Sense Education. These lessons were taught by our Social Studies teachers who are all certified Common Sense Educators. Common Sense helps kids learn the habits and skills they need to use technology safely and responsibly in school, at home, and beyond.
WHAT IS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP? Kids today may seem like experts at using technology, but the digital world requires all kinds of skills and habits that kids don’t just pick up as they go. Digital citizenship helps them learn those skills. The Common Sense lessons help students in grades 6–8 reflect on their tech use and make thoughtful choices about how and when they use it. Kids also learn about how to stand up to cyberbullying, use social media carefully, and look critically at the news.
WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO - Common Sense Education provides resources to help you support your kid’s learning. As we teach these lessons in our Social Studies class, you can visit the Common Sense website at www.commonsensemedia.org for tip sheets and activities you can do with your kids.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Working together with Common Sense Education, we can prepare today’s kids to think critically and use tech in positive, creative, and powerful ways.
Parents who need a place to start the conversation and to set boundaries, can begin with this Common Sense Family Media Agreement....CHECK IT OUT!
Here's a Family Tips article that correlate with the Cyberbullying lessons our students participated in with their Social Studies teachers.
Help Kids Fight Cyberbullying and Other Mean Online Behavior
DRESS CODE REMINDER...All yoga pants, tights, leggings, or jeggings must cover the student's hips, bottom, and undergarments and must be covered by shorts, skirts, shirts or dresses that completely cover the student's hips and bottom. Students are being asked to sign the Discipline Log and add their PE shorts to cover their hips and bottoms. We would love to avoid the need to do this.
State Assessment
Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) is coming in April. It is replacing Scantron as the state's summative assessment tool. We are already implementing plans to introduce our students to the online testing tools necessary to take the assessment. Today, we looked at the tools used for the English Language Arts assessments. Students would benefit from having a USB mouse for the assessment if they typically use one when using their Chromebook. It's not required but it would be a plus for some students.

HALF-WAY DAY FEEDBACK
KEEPING OUR BUILDING CLEAN
Before school, throughout the day and afterschool, our Custodial Team is using germicide and disinfectants on water fountains, handrails, doors, handlebars, and toilet handles. Additionally, they are wiping down desks, light switches, doorknobs and tables within classrooms.
In addition to keeping our building clean, we encourage everyone to....
1) Stay home if you are sick or running a fever. 24 hour rule - 24 hours free of fever with no fever-reducing meds.
2) Sneeze or cough into the crook of the elbow or one's sleeve or into a tissue.
3) Keep space between you and friends - 3-6 feet, preferred, but not always possible.
4) Get plenty of rest;
5) Eat well and stay hydrated;
6) Get exercise (a little fresh air and sunshine will benefit all of us);
7) Hang on .. Spring Break is coming (6 school days away)!
