How Basketball Was Created
Basketball originated in 1891 when a future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a physical education class at a Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was told to create a new game because the class was disorderly. It was winter and very cold outside so he needed to create a game that was inside. He got the idea of basketball from a game called "duck on a rock" and rugby players tossing a ball into a box in the gym. which gave him the idea to nail up boxes on the wall and have kids throw balls to make it inside. He made some rules to the game which took about an hour and some are still used today. The name "Basket Ball" came from a student, who first learned the game.
How Basketball Impacted The African American Society
African-Americans weren’t aloud to participate in National Basketball Association games until 1950, when Earl Lloyd played for the Washington Capitals. Basketball, was an out for most African Americans, who were involved with the sport. It became the sport that most African Americans played after the 1950's. During this time the world was segregated, and with this sport introduced to the world, I strongly believe that it brought the world together, and especially for the African Americans. The segregation gradually stopped, and the entire world became integrated. Basketball made a big change for African Americans and helped make the world a better place. I think it opened up a window for white people to accept black people.
