Inspiring and Empowering Every Child to Thrive Every Day
Dear Family,
Happy New Year! Welcome back to Hollywood Beach School, and a fresh start. Charles Lamb stated, "New Year's Day is every man's birthday." It is a refreshing time to reflect, and resolve to grow.
Dr. Carol Dweck is an educational researcher who coined a term, "Growth Mindset," referring to an attitude that people have regarding success and failure. Students with a growth mindset believe that failure is never permanent, but a learning opportunity. A growth mindset (versus a fixed mindset) means that a person realizes that with time and effort everyone can be successful. People with this attitude are more resilient, because let's face it; everyone has set backs, and no one is perfect. People with a growth mindset don't give up! It's how we view our failures that influence our future achievement.
You may hear your child talk about "Failure Friday." On Fridays, some teachers are giving children very difficult science and engineering challenges, ones in which they will likely not be successful. The purpose of these tasks is not to make children feel like failures, but to help them develop an attitude of creativity, persistence, and resiliency. As Edison quipped, "I have not failed. I've just found 1000 ways that won't work." Perhaps there is a future innovator in your home such as Steve Jobs, J.K. Rowling, Thomas Edison or Oprah Winfrey. All of these famous men and women had profound failures in their lives, yet they persisted, and society reaped the rewards. The growth mindset will help your child to cope with failure, to blossom, and work hard. The whole world may benefit from their future failures. You can nurture your child to have the growth mindset by helping them rephrase negative statements. For example, if you hear your child say, "I'm either good at it or I'm not" restate it as, "I can learn anything I want to." Change, "I can't" to "I haven't learned this yet, but I'm going to keep working at it." Change, "It's too hard," to "This may take some time and effort." Also, when you hear students use phrases that reflect a positive mindset, praise them for their efforts! What a powerful character trait they are displaying!
Growth mindset is not just for students, but for all of us. We all can improve our attitudes. Life is full of lessons to learn. I wish you a new year full of growth, happiness and blessings!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lipsett
Principal
