PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
BUMPUS OPEN HOUSE
We are excited to be able to host Open House at Bumpus. In an effort to safely host Open House, we will do things a little different than in the past. The team teachers will address the parents, and there will be time to tour the building.
In addition, there will be meetings for Band, Choir and 8th grade Spanish I. In order to have all of the classrooms clean for the following school day, we will not be able to have the individual core classrooms and all of the elective classrooms open during Open House.
A few important notes and kind requests from Bumpus:
• In order to allow for adequate physical spacing in the team sessions listed below, we respectfully request that only one parent / guardian attend and also that Bumpus students do not attend.
• Per the Hoover Board of Education, facial coverings are required for all guests while indoors. • For your student’s open house night, we will only focus on the opportunity to meet the academic teachers and teams plus Band & Choir.
• Information about Bumpus PE and Electives is available on the Bumpus website. Check out each class on the individual Week at a Glance sections.
EXAMPLES:
If you have a 6-3 child who does band, you come from 6:40–7:10 for the band meeting & 7:15-7:50 for 6-3 meeting.
If you have a 7-1 child who does not do choir or band you come from 6:00-6:35 & then tour the school if you want.
If you have a 8-4 child who does choir, you come from 6:40 – 7:10 for the choir meeting & 7:15-7:50 for the 8-4 meeting.
You will on be in the building for a little over an hour at the most. See the schedule below.
iReady Testing - Aug. 31, Sept. 1 & Sept. 2
This year our students will take the i-Ready Assessment. This assessment is replacing the Scantron test. The i-Ready Assessment will help our teachers make informed decisions about instruction.
We will take the i-Ready benchmark test August 31, Sept 1 & Sept 2 during a special HR period at the beginning of the day.
REGISTRATION FEES
MySchoolFees Opens on September 1st
Registration fees will open for payment on MySchoolFees on Sept. 1, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. At that time, you will be able to pay the required fees and some optional fees for your student.*
In order to help you prepare and budget for those fees, we are attaching a "Fee Sheet" to this email. As you will notice, all students are required to pay for the Device Protection Plan, the Locker Fee, and the Mailing Fee. Sixth graders must also pay $15 for electives and 7th and 8th graders must pay a total of $30 for their electives. Therefore, most 6th graders will have a total of $55 in required fees and most 7th and 8th graders will pay $70 in required fees. (This may be less if your student is in certain electives, such as ELL or Intervention classes, or it may be more if your student is in Band or Choir and has to pay a mandatory uniform fee.)
We are also listing some optional fees for which you may want to budget such as Spirit Shirts, Color Run, and Yearbook. Donation options are also listed and described.
We do not know if we are going to be able to dress out for PE yet, so PE uniforms are not available for purchase at this time.
If you have not used MySchoolFees before, please click on the following link to the User's Guide.

*If you do not have a MasterCard, a Discover card, or electronic checks, you may pay by cash or check after Sept. 1 at a designated time.

NEWS FROM MRS. SCHMITH, SCHOOL NURSE
Parents, attached is a copy of the CLOSE CONTACT NOTIFICATION letter sent out per HCS. If you receive this letter in an email, it will be because your child was identified as a close contact either in the classroom, PE, lunch, bus or extracurricular activities. Please see the definition of a close contact as outlined in Attachment F in the ADPH BACK TO SCHOOL GUIDANCE 21-22. We encourage parents to follow the recommendations set forth by the CDC/ADPH which suggest parents quarantine the student for 10 days from the exposure date in order to monitor for symptoms. Students who develop symptoms should be tested and reported to the health room if positive. We do not mandate quarantine, so a student can remain in school with the following special considerations:
1. The student must have NO SYMPTOMS AT ALL to be in school
2. The parent MUST monitor the student daily for 10 days for any symptoms following the known exposure
3. The student must immediately isolate and be tested if symptoms present at any time
I have included the Covid 19 screening tool which lists symptoms to look for in your child. If any are present please keep your child at home even if they ARE NOT considered a close contact.
If you choose for your child to quarantine at home, please notify attendance at jprescott@hoover.k12.al.us so these days will be excused. Your child can notify their teachers for assignments and do remote learning.
As always...if your child is positive please contact the health room at mschmith@hoover.k12.al.us for tracking and reporting purposes.
COVID SYMPTOMS
Please note if your child is experiencing even ONE of the following symptoms please keep them home and monitor them.
This is the tool we use for sending students home, however, due to COVID, student's should be monitored before coming to school.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congrats to Nia Mya Reese, 7th gr. student, who is the youngest person featured in Alabama Power’s campaign, “Power That Moves” as showcased in media all across the state for her achievements as a young, best selling author. HOUSEKEEPING INFORMATION
KEEPING STUDENTS INFORMED!
ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
Please email Mrs. Prescott at jprescott@hoover.k12.al.us or call (205) 439-2268 concerning any attendance issues.
A signed parent/doctor note is required within three (3) days of returning in order to excuse an absence or check-in/out. Doctors notes can be emailed to Mrs. Prescott or dropped in the excuse boxes in the main lobby or throughout the school. Please include the student’s full name and the reason for the absence on the parent note. ***Quarantine related absences MUST be cleared with Nurse Schmith at x2230 or mschmith@hoover.k12.al.us.
ANTICIPATED ABSENCE FORMS - If it is necessary for your student to be gone from school for such events as family events, trips, dance recitals, travel sports, etc., it is necessary for them to complete an Anticipated Absence Form and turn it in at least 3 days in advance, so that the absence may be excused. This form is available on the Bumpus Middle School website, or in the 2nd floor office.
There is a section on the form to be completed, with the reason for the absence, and signed by the parent, then the student fills in his schedule and obtains the signatures of his teachers, and submits it to the 2nd Floor Office for administrator approval. Approval is based on the student's grade averages and current attendance record. After the signature is obtained, Mrs. Prescott in the 2nd office will enter the absence into PowerSchool. Please note: if the student only plans to be gone for part of a day, he or she needs to enter the time of checkout, and get the signatures of only the teachers whose classes they will miss. Also, there is no need to obtain signatures from virtual teachers, (although they should be notified by email of the absence and the form emailed to Mrs. Prescott).
LUNCH ACCOUNTS
All students will have free breakfast and lunch during the 2021-2022 school year. While breakfast and lunch will be free, à la carte items such as extra snacks and beverages must be purchased. To replenish your child’s lunch account, please visit MySchoolBucks.com or send cash or check with your student to pay in the lunchroom or a secure drop box for lunch payments is located in the Front Lobby.
