Selective Verbatim
A data collection tool for observation and diagnosis.
Purpose & Focus
Used to collect data on the verbal content of a lesson. This includes what is said within a specific category of concern selected by a teacher such as questioning techniques or statements related to student behavior.
It is essential to define the focus prior to collecting selective verbatim data. Then, as the Clinical Educator, you will generate a written record of exactly what is said during the lesson and categorize the teacher behaviors according to the selected area of focus.
Selective Verbatim Sample
Notice that the focus in the sample below is teacher questioning and each question posed is recorded exactly as it was stated to the students during the lesson.
Selective Verbatim Data Collection in the Virtual Environment
If observing a Developing Educator's lesson in a virtual environment, Selective Verbatim data can still be captured. Consider the following:
- Tracking teacher or student interactions in a Canvas course (discussion boards, quiz responses, comments on documents, feedback) based on the selected focus
- Observing a TEAMS lesson and recording verbal content, verbatim, according to the selected focus
