A Highlight from Week 5

Our first book of the month club was a success!

The students enjoyed our featured book called Charlie Cook's Favorite Book by Julia Donaldson. They also loved sharing their personal favorite books with one another too!

App of the Week

This week's featured app is Kids A-Z.

This is Learning A-Z's app for reading eBooks from Raz-Kids! The Raz-Kids app has been renamed and redesigned! Kids A-Z is now the app your students use to access their Raz-Kids.

Raz-Kids delivers hundreds of interactive, leveled eBooks spanning 27 levels

  • 400+ eBooks and open-book eQuizzes, with new books added every month, even in Spanish!
  • The motivational "Raz Rocket" gets students excited about reading and strengthens the school-to-home connection

Important Dates to Remember

Homework Readers:

Your child should bring home a book this week. Please read the book with your child and sign the reading log. Also, make sure that your child brings their book to school daily.

Hallway Reading Volunteers: We will begin the week of October 12th. Your child's teacher will email you with more details.

O.C. Taylor has early dismissal days October 7 & 8. First Grade will use this time to have Beginning of the Year conferences to discuss your child's current reading, writing & math levels and goals. We look forward to seeing you soon.

What are we learning this week?

Math: Use place value to compare whole numbers up to 50 using comparative language. I can use mathematical language to compare groups of objects. I can use mathematical language to compare numbers.

Reading: I can use three kinds of thinking to stop and check the meaning of my reading.

Writing: I can describe traits of a piece of writing.

Science: I can observe, compare, describe and sort components of soil by size, texture and color.

Social Studies: I can identify characteristics of good citizenship. I can give examples of good citizens and describe the things they do.
