Leaving Quality Feedback
This newsletter contains information on leaving quality feedback.
Best Practice
A best practice for online instructors within GaVS is to integrate into the feedback direct references to the learning objectives, as well as offer further resources for a deeper examination of the content.
Rubrics
Some courses have rubrics in them for assignments. You can use these or create your own.
Below are the steps to add a rubric to an assignment:
Step 1: Go to the Assignment you want to add a rubric:
Step 2: Search for the rubric you want OR make a new one:
Step 3: Choose EDIT:
Step 4: Click the box in the image below:
Great Feedback
- Remember, great feedback includes an image, video, or a link to an outside source.
If I need to create feedback for an assignment about "cells" for example, I will google cells and look and see what I can find about that topic. I try to link to sites that explain the information in that assignment, include a picture that explains the topic, or attach a video that explains the topic.
- Since we've moved to Canvas, I've done less with images as feedback because they have to be attached and students have to download them to view them.
Examples
Turnitin
If you have an assignment that you think might be likely to be plagiarized, an essay for example, you can enable Turnitin. Your NIPC course has information on how to enable Turnitin and view the plagiarism report.
This feedback is an example of a best practice because it includes a video to an outside source. Sometimes, it is difficult to think about what to put as feedback for students that earn 100% on an assignment. This is why I include a video or link or image with ALL feedback so those kids that earn 100% still get "something". You can just copy the Embed code from YouTube into the HTML part of the feedback to get a video embedded like this. Email me if you have more questions and I'll walk you through it.
This is an example of discussion feedback. The rubric is completed, with descriptions as to why the student did not earn full credit on a part of the rubric. The directions below show them how to view the rubric feedback and give them a link to a place where they can find more information on the topic.
